" Clearly, he can only perform so many songs on any given night, and assuming that *most* of his shows will run no longer than about ninety minutes, his sets will consist of about fifteen songs (give or take), some chat and -- of course -- tuning (not necessarily listed in order of cumulative time! Heh!). At what point does "Fennario" actually *replace* "Fishing" in the set? At what point does "Last Fare of The Day" become as much a sure thing as "Arrowhead"? At what point will we actually have to *request* "Reunion Hill" or "Transit"? I know that in the months before the August '97 release of "Reunion Hill," that the title track, "Next Best Western" and "I Saw My Youth Today" were becoming "heavy rotation" set staples, at the expense of stuff that I recall hearing a lot more regularly ("Blue Divide," "You Again") prior to that. Same with "SNP," where "Abuelita," "Confession" and "You Stay Here" started even replacing some of the "RH" songs. I would imagine that "Transit" will stay in the set-list for a good long time, as I recall Charlie Hunter once saying that it was the song that they wanted to be representative of The New Richard. But I can certainly imagine that "Next Best Western" and "Summer Wind, Cotton Dress" and some others (unfortunately, not "Are You Happy Now?" which has pretty much become his "Dead Skunk" . . . and don't read too much into that comparison) will start going on the back burner. Originally there were two but I guess it didn't sell well. The only show itself didn't sell all that way- no one was seated in the balcony, surprising for Richard. Despite the modest turnout, Richard performed a wonderful set. In fact, it felt like two sets (even though he didn't take a break) because he played so long and the first seven songs were all unreleased and the rest were basically Richard's Greatest Hits. Richard performed all of the songs sitting down. Set list Fernario Che G. T-shirt Simple Song (en Espanol). Even though I have absolutely no idea of what the words mean, it's wonderful. Richard said that he writes more mushy in Spanish than in his native tongue. Waist Deep in the Big Muddy - Pete Seeger (!!) There goes Mavis (Is this Richard's answer to "I saw a bird fly away"? -- Mavis is a canary.... Richard said that he has two canaries, one of which is named Mavis. Green Gray So Says the Whippoorwill Reunion Hill Mary Magdalen - I guess this was an audience mostly of Richard regulars as no one laughed at the "his career or mine" line Arrowhead (fast and Richard messed up) Wisteria Fishing Nora (!!!) Transit - Richard changed "Reagan Republicans to Ashcroft Republicans" Last Fare of the Day The encore was Randy Newman's Louisiana 1927, which reminds me just a tad of his Money for Floods. Then there was something about while he was in the states some local musicians in Buenos Aires were recording parts down there. Was I just imagining this? I can't believe he'd JUST be starting to record for an album coming out in Feb...Lucy's new album is coming out the first week of Feb and she's been done recording for awhile now. I'm confused!!!
