Modern bluegrass music is not the Grand Ole Opry. It's going in several directions, and Kris has the chops for more than one of them. << I don't disagree. However, what she can play and what she's recording are two different things, and what we're hearing on Kris's albums is not even "modern bluegrass a la Delmhorst." Her Vinal Avenue String Band CD, now that's a whole 'nother bale of hay. If you can listen to that and not want to stomp your feet, grab some moonshine whiskey and some of Bob's homegrown, float down a lazy river with Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox, and immediately want to go off and marry your sister, well, you're a better person than I am. Ummmm . . . maybe that was too much information. ;-) RG ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 15:15:47 -0700 From: Terry Woodburn Subject: [RS] Yee haw! Ahhh, the definition of bluegrass.... Goes back as far as when Bill Monroe, the appointed (some would say self-annointed) Father of Bluegrass would hear someone like Peter Rowan or like minded "modernizers" of the genre and would grouse that "that ain't nuthin' from nuthin"; Sad to say, the bluegrass Nazis are still a big voice in the genre. But every genre has it's purists, no doubt. (wink) I have played many folk artist songs with a bluegrass band and they always seem to be go head over heels with compliments, then the inevitable, "but it's not really bluegrass" like we need to stamp approval on it like a hunk of meat in the store. OK, fine,. It's free-range bluegrass...That better? Where was I? I think Kris has the chops to nail bluegrass, but it is refreshing she can wear many hats in her music. Hell, Shindell could do a straight ahead bluegrass album if he wanted. But I am just fine and dandy with them doing what they do on their terms. I know, Richard doing bluegrass....scary thought. ;-) Muss his hair up, sprout a long beard and black out a tooth here and there..... I would like to clarify that I am not a purist...but I have a liking for the roots of genres. I guess sometimes I hear what people call bluegrass, folk, or blues and get a little confused. I love artists that dip in all different genres but I don't think Gillian Welch is bluegrass for example - she is influenced by it as she is influenced by old country and traditional music. That may seem like a petty difference but when you think about it, people who play "old school" folk, bluegrass, and blues do not get the recognition they deserve. There is something beautiful about carrying on the tradition. Then again maybe putting artists in a genre box is the main problem here. I'd love to hear Richard tackle something like that, just like when Dan Fogelberg (God, I've mentioned his name in TWO posts today . . . someone shoot me, or at least check my ID to make sure I'm the real Rongrittz) did his great "High Country Snows" album with some of the best bluegrass pickers out there, including Jerry Douglas, Chris Hillman, David Grisman, Ricky Skaggs and others. Heck, Richard has said on numerous occasions that the "Old & In The Way" record changed his life. And the boy can WAIL on the acoustic guitar, as anyone who's heard him go nuts at the end of "Shades of Gray" can attest.
