I've had a chance to listen to the new Kris Delmhorst and I pretty much loved everything I heard. Melodies are somewhat similar to Five Stories, but overall, good solid third record and sure to help her break out a bit more than she already has. I've yet to see her in concert, which I truly regret, but then again we New Yorkers aren't as lucky as you New Englanders in getting to see artists all that regularly. Wait a minute, caught Louise Taylor (Vermonter) at the Knitting Factory last week and she was more than magnificent, and her new songs (beyond Velvet Town) are just mind blowing. Here on Long Island we have had was the deadest summer--as far as music is concerned--that I can ever remember. How's that for being unequivocally off topic here on the Shindell list? Mea Culpa. Not at all. Speaking for myself here, one of the reasons I joined this listserv was to broaden my exposure to folk music and increase my awareness of quality artists and groups. I've never heard of Kris Delmhorst; would anyone care to describe her music and style? - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2003 09:17:13 -0400 From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Don't Mind Me >> I've never heard of Kris Delmhorst; would anyone care to describe her music and style? << Go buy Kris Delmhorst's "Five Stories." Where did the summer go? Agreed. Time's just rushing on by. I welcome the change in the weather, though. WFUV is my favorite radio station. If we could get her a guitar internship with RS, she could own the world. I say this, because, she freely admits she could expand the variety of her chord use. Any of you who don't know Kris, I recommend you go to her site and download the MP3 of "Hummingbird" or any of the others. I doesn't take much to be "sold" on Kris (krisdelmhorst.com). I will give a real review when I receive the album, but it won't be impartial ;-). FYI, I am happy to report that Kris won the Rocky Mountain Folk Festival Contest (I think last year) and one of my other favorite up-and-comers won it this year: Brian Joseph (brianjosephmusic.com). I am also waiting on his album, he however, doesn't need to learn any new chords. He is an all-around threat. 'Hurricane' is one of those CDs that sounded familiar the first or second time I listened to it. I got it about three weeks ago, and have listened to it at least five or six times. I keep changing the other five discs in the car, but that one has been staying in. And, to Ron D, Kris was in NYC during the winter, at Joe's Pub, doing a co-bill with Lori McKenna. It was an excellent show. If we need a bit of Richard content, Lincoln Schleifer played bass for Lori's set. Kris will be back in NYC October 15, at Fez, in a co-bill with Mark Erelli. I really like it. Most of it is pretty mellow (although there are a few "rockers" on it). The only "drawback" is that on a couple of the quiet songs, you have to turn up the volume to hear Kris's voice. Among many others, Kris thanks Dar Williams in the liner notes. Probably because of that, I found a couple of Dar "references." She mentions Spring Street in one song and in another song, a line starts "how I longed..." which totally makes me think of Iowa. Sorry, not much of a review, but if you're interested in the cd, I think you can listen to songs samples on Kris's website. I haven't taken her "Five Stories" cd out of my stereo for weeks now! I had the chance to see her up at Summerfest in New Bedford this past July and she was great! I had heard of her but didn't know her songs until she played "Little Wings", and that I am sure I heard on the radio. It was great to hear her tell stories to go with the songs. Great cd and I would love to see her again! Janet __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
