I hadn't camped before - this is the only way to go! I'm still suffering from a folk hippie hangover, four days later. It was very hard to return to the world... Did anyone else hear Dar talking about checking out and supporting emerging artists, then go on to list Richard as one of the same? This rubbed me the wrong way, but maybe it was just me. I missed song circles, spent way too much time in the dance tent into the early morning hours. I'm still feeling sleep-deprived :-) Did anyone see Richard at Club Passim in Cambridge last night? I imagine it would have been a great show, and want to hear. He's going to be on www.wumb.org at noon today (Thursday). peace out, dave ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 10:06:38 -0400 From: Robyn Follen Subject: RE: [RS] FR etc. > Did anyone else hear Dar talking about checking out and > supporting emerging artists, then go on to list Richard as > one of the same? In fact, I remember discovering them both at the same time at Newport in '94 (I think...). That's plenty long to not be considered an emerging artist! I'm sure it was just a mistake. > I missed song circles, spent way too much time in the dance > tent into the early morning hours. I'm still feeling > sleep-deprived :-) Ah, the dance tent - I went to FRFF wanting to visit the dance tent a lot. Let it be known that I have no idea how to square dance or contra dance... So I ventured down there on Friday at some point and was completely floored by how everyone knew what they were doing - I knew nothing but ended up joining a square dance with my equally unskilled partner. It was so fun, but I felt like I needed lots more beginner sessions before I could join an "M" session... Maybe next year I'll get there for a beginner session... > Did anyone see Richard at Club Passim in Cambridge last > night? I imagine it would have been a great show, and want to hear. Yes! I want reviews too (couldn't make it...) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 10:20:59 EDT From: ThisWasPompeii@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] FR etc. In a message dated 07/31/2003 9:00:15 AM Central Daylight Time, David.Purpura@nokia.com writes: > Did anyone else hear Dar talking about checking out and supporting emerging > artists, then go on to list Richard as one of the same? Richard may not be as famous as Dar but he's *not* an emerging artist. Furthermore, I don't find myself feeling frustrated that he's trying to crossover into pop or release that breakout album. Please don't flame me Dar-heads, but in my opinion Dar's albums have declined in quality. That's not true of Richard's albums. While both Dar and Richard have written songs I absolutely love and songs I dislike, if I stacked Dar's best songs next to Richard's best songs, I would say Richard's have more subtlety and more of a sense of irony. For me, that makes him a more accomplished songwriter. :::::::::ducking and running for cover::::::::::: ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 10:33:37 -0400 From: Robyn Follen Subject: RE: [RS] FR etc. > Please don't flame me Dar-heads, but in my opinion Dar's > albums have declined > in quality. I find that her earlier stuff had so much more melody and spirit, and her later stuff is pretty monotone and, dare i say, kind of boring... Nonetheless, I really enjoyed seeing her at FRFF and was totally holding out for a Dar, Lucy, Richard singalong. Alas, some good things never come to those who wait :-) Hey, so what's everyone's favorite Richard song? How come? She was extemporizing on the value of Falcon Ridge . . . how it's such a great place to see emerging artists (as in the Emerging Artist Showcase), then went on to list some of the other great artists who were there that weekend. Let's not put words into Dar's mouth; let's not propogate rumours that have no basis in fact. To insinuate that Dar was placing herself above Richard Shindell (or anyone else, for that matter) is ludicrous. The early show was sold out but I was able to sneak into the late show. He played many new songs in this set. His songs keep getting better and better. I cant wait for the new album to come out. As for songs recorded, he did a beautiful version of "Reunion Hill" as well as "Summer Wind Cotton Dress". "Transit" was also very nice, as always. For those setlist inclined, we also had "Wisteria", "Nora" - a nice surprise - "Ballad of Mary Magdelene" and "The Courier". A funny story: During the show he was talking about his home a bit, and 2 girls up front spoke spanish and were talking to him in spanish. Amazing show. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! This >>rubbed me the wrong way, but maybe it was just me. << If you're referring to Dar's mainstage set, the context is important. She had just finished singing 'Are You Out There,' and was speaking of Jim(my) Olsen, the co-founder of Signature Sounds records, and one of the DJs she mentions in the song. She went on to speak in glowing terms about the work he is doing with his label, and with presenting new artists. In this context, Dar referred to some of the artists on Signature Sounds, and, specifically, the ones in Signature's ad in the FRFF program. She mentioned Kris Delmhorst and Richard, plus a third artist whose name I can't remember. She then asked 'Who is the fourth person in the ad?' and someone called out that it was Josh Ritter. This tells me that she checked out the ad, and used the four names in the ad as a way of showing the quality of the artists on the label. Unless the statement you mention is different from this one, I am positive that this was not intended in any way as a slight toward Richard. I just wanted to echo the sentiments expressed by Adam Plunkett: the late show last night in Harvard was fabulous. This was the second time that I had heard RS's new material, the first being at an April 4th show in Maryland, and the new songs have really really grown on me. The playlist, as I recall it, featured: - --The Courier - --Last Fare of the Day - --Che Guevarra T-shirt - --Green-Grey - --So Said the Whipporwhill (or whatever it's called) - --[can't remember title; based on an old Scottish ballad, with a verse from a John Donne poem] - --Reunion Hill - --Fishing - --Nora - --A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress - --The Ballad of Mary Magdalen - --Darkness, Darkness - --Transit - --Good Year for the Roses (encore) All in all, a terrific set. Fishing and Transit were especially good, and I am simply in love with Last Fare of the Day and the Whipporwhill song. I don't recall hearing Wisteria; I'm certain it was not played (at the 10PM show), as it is one of my favorites and would have stuck out. RS maintained an excellent rapport with the audience, very funny and down-to-earth as always. Does anyone know how progress on his next album is coming? I can't wait to hear the new songs at my leisure; RS's songwriting just keeps getting better and better. Simply fabulous. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V5 #156 ***********************************
