'Cause outside the rain is falling down AGAIN, my daughter's graduation party is this weekend, and there's no sign of sun in New York until next week. Maybe if we all sing together.... Who knew? Below is a clip from the We're About 9 newsletter. They are a three piece group that won the 2002 Falcon Ridge showcase in a landslide. I have been listening to their EP (with an additional live cut I downloaded, legit, from their site) about once every two weeks since last FRFF. We saw them a few weeks ago at the Mainstage Coffee House as part of the Falcon Ridge Preview Tour. They are smart, literate, funny, and way too talented. I enjoyed their set as much as anything I have seen in a long time. And, they have great taste in artists they choose to cover: >>NEW RELEASE! >>We're About 9 is in the final mixing stages of our soon to be released >>album, ENGINE. Andy and Denise, our friends, idols, and producers have >>turned us in to super-folks. Engine will be available for sale starting >>at Falcon Ridge and features ten songs including Writing Again, Another >>Love Song, Slow Sliding Funk, Albany, and an a cappella arrangement of >>Richard Shindell's "Money For Floods." << If you go to their web site ( www.circanine.com ) you can download a few of their songs. They are all good, but 'Writing Again' is the best of a fine bunch. They played some of the new songs at the Mainstage, and I cannot wait to get my hands on this new CD. There is a great duet with Rusby and the lead that has that yearning sound. He's covered Nic Jones. And I remember he was very thrilled to report that Richard THompson had actually COME ON STAGE to play backup when he did a gig in Florida. But otherwise more the celtic influences, I should think. I'm suddenly drawing a blank on the well-known Scots singer/songwriter of depressing songs -- used to do trad. -- now writes own -- I keep coming up Dougie MacLean but that's not it - help! I particularly like his song "Outside of the Inside". It's written from the POV of a narrow-minded Fundamentalist and starts "God never listened to Charlie Parker Charlie Parker died in vain Blasphemer, womaniser Let a needle numb his brain Wash away his demon music Damn his demons, Damn his pain" Norman ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V5 #136 ***********************************
