["Gene Frey" Subject: [RS] 2 Party System > Lisa- I agree about the frustration of having a two party system. Some would argue three, but so far only two that stand a chance of actually becoming governing party. What is equally frustrating to me, is that often times, though not now (to my chagrin), the President is working with an opposite party house, and therefore can't get a thing done because no one is supporting him. I personally do not thing a woman's reproductive rights belongs as a political agenda item. >>I love the theory of the Republican party - let the people govern >>themselves whenever possible, Is this really their theory? Because just sticking to the one mentioned issue above, pro-choice, I believe that is a highly personal choice and belief and the Republican party finds it one of their main missions to make sure no one has a choice, i.e. not allowing a woman to govern herself. Hey you guys, Ron G. wrote (about 10 days ago): >>Hey, speaking of "Before You Go," a couple of friends and I were talking >>yesterday about how much stuff Richard might have almost ready to go for a >>new album. So far, I'm thinking: Before You Go I Am The Island Last Fare of the Day Che Guevara T-Shirt Grey-Green Hideous Grin Farewell to St. Dolores << As one of the people discussing this with Ron, I gave it some thought myself afterward, and the lack of response to Ron's post would indicate that none of us have come up with anything else. Lest we forget, it has been over 39 months since the release of 'Somewhere Near Paterson,' and there doesn't seem to be anything in the air about a new release. I enjoyed 'Courier' as much as the next person, but as good as it was, it represented new performances, not new music. I know that Richard has never been known as a prolific songwriter, but this has been a long time even for him. Is there any news about a potential new CD from those who would really know? Besides, I really want a copy of 'Last Fare' to listen to over and over again. It is my favorite among the new ones. A quick note or two on the IMAC Huntington show. First, ditto to Ron D. on the sound. We have seen four or five shows there, and it is probably our favorite space. Great sound, 9 PM showtime so we don't have to rush around, reserved seats, and excellent sight lines. Plus, it's about five miles from my office. Late in the show people began calling out requests. We refrained from calling for 'The Weather,' but a woman up front called for 'Are You Happy Now,' which, incredibly, he had not played up to that point. Finally, she called out (and I may be paraphrasing a bit here) 'You can't leave without playing Are You Happy Now.' Richard got a devilish grin on his face and said 'Oh, I'm GONNA leave without playing Are You Happy Now.' Maybe first-timers didn't appreciate it, but those of us who have heard AYHN time and time again thought it was extremely funny. At one time Republicans were more like Libertarians. In the words of Bill Maher: a bunch of mean old men who kept an eye on his money. Personal decisions were up to the individual. Our country is so dominated by lobbyists that voting one party or another makes little difference. Look at the bill that attempted to keep our corporations from locating offshore to avoid taxes. Twelve times it's come up, and 12 times it's died. A disgusted Senator McCain (a Republican, by the way) said these decisions get made behind closed doors, not on the floor of Congress. Another victory for corporations. I have a solution: outlaw campaign ads on TV. Those ads are expensive, and politicians are constantly having to raise funds. Has anyone ever proposed such a law? No. The powers that be won't give up control without a fight. As long as they can manipulate the public by obscuring facts, they will. TV helps them do that. I vote for the individual, not the party, and then I'm a squeaky wheel on issues that concern me. That said, I seem to be a lot more comfortable with Democrats than Republicans. Try being a gay man who IS that leftest pinko liberal Mummy and Daddy warned you about and have a boyfriend who is a conservative Republican born-again Christian. No, I am not kidding. My friends think we're the gay answer to James Carville and Mary Matlin. We have learned not to talk politics. And he's lucky I am nuts about him--nuts enough that I took out books by Anne Coulter and that O'Reilly schmuck for him. However, HE paid the late fines. I DO have my limits! But he is learning to love RS's music. See--politically he's backward. But he DOES have potential! He said that he's been writing a lot ("a lot" being relative, of course) of shore-related songs of late, so I'd suppose that there are several more songs that he's not yet blessed us with in concert. It was quite a treat to see Richard and Lucy in my own town, and in such a beautiful venue. The Media theater has undergone many transformations over the years, and hopefully now will host more of these concerts. It's a wonderful place to see a show. Besides the beautiful interior, there are many nice restaurants, all on the same street within walking distance, in which to eat before the show, and lots of free parking in the evenings I've seen both Richard and Lucy perform many times over the years, but I don't think that I have ever heard Lucy sing more beautifully than she did that night. She seemed truly inspired, her voice was as clear and haunting as ever, and she remains as unpretentious and sweet as always. Richard's set was a nice mix, nearly identical to the set lists I've seen posted recently, including three of his new songs, the strongest and most moving of which I felt was "The Last Fare of the Day." He seemed a bit tired to me, but his voice is always stunning. I could happily just sit and listen to his speaking voice any day. He didn't sing any of his "war themed" songs, nor did he mention the current war in Iraq, the French, or Evian water. He simply said at the end of the evening that many people would might otherwise have been at home, glued to their tv sets, and that he hoped they had provided some respite from that. I thought it was a very nice way to acknowledge the events of the world around us, while letting us still enjoy the afterglow of the concert. Unfortunately, Richard's set was harder for me to completely lose myself in, due to the person in the row or two directly behind me singing (loudly) along to every song that he knew. He was obviously familiar with Richard's material and I found myself silently hoping that he would not know the words to the next song in the set, so that I could properly enjoy it. It's hard to experience the full effect of "Cold Missouri Waters" and "Transit" with some guy singing every word in your ear. A few glares over my shoulder had no apparent effect, and I didn't want to cause further disruption by trying to figure out who it was. It was clearly out of place in an intimate, indoor setting where people are trying to appreciate, what for many of us, is a truly moving and emotional experience. ( I doubt that a fellow lister would be that insensitive, but he was obviously a fan.) But anyway... As Bill said in a previous post about this show: "Great concert, many wandering thoughts, very inspiring. Having been there last night makes me feel there is still a reason and a place for really beautiful art to exist in this world." I couldn't agree more.
