These two are true artists: wonderfully intelligent wit, completely unpretentious, incredibly touching songs and, as expected, a great show. Lucy opened but was soon joined by Richard and she later sang with him again for much of his set. For those of you who have seen them perform together you know they have a delightful rapport on stage. They mentioned how they first met when Lucy was hired last-minute to sing abck-up on Richard's CD. Lucy mentioned that she had gotten married in nearby Bryn Mawr (lots of applause) and pointed out the in-law side of her family were all in the audience last night. Between songs in his set, Richard later out-of-nowhere proclaimed "Bryn Mawr !" teasing that as it had worked for Lucy (in that the mere mention of the towns name brought her applause), he would try it too (of course, it worked for him too). The theater was nice; an old movie theater that has a yesteryear sort of appearance (an extended run of "Hair" opens there in a week or so). Richard marveled that the wooden walls of the theater's interior which, he pointed out, had actually been painted long ago by someone to look like wood (I love it when anyone talks about painting, as I am a painter). The songs were mostly what you guys have been reporting, gorgeous older ones and beautiful new ones. They opened and closed with Dave Carter songs. Richard made a pitch for all of us to buy Dave and Tracy's CDs and urged us despite of any obstacles to go out of our way see Tracy perform. Both gingerly made pitches for us to buy their own CDs which (with the exception of the Cry, Cry, Cry CD) were for sale in the lobby. Afterwards both Lucy and Richard came into the lobby and spoke with the long line of autograph-seeking folks waiting to say hi. I started to say "hi" but there were so many people I decided to check out those faux-wood walls and afterwards just headed home. Great concert, many wandering thoughts, very inspiring. Having been there last night makes me feel there is still a reason and a place for really beautiful art to exist in this world.
