I think it's in his blood (I wonder - does anyone know does he have any Irish blood?) {Hey Scott! Are You guys Irish?) I'm sure the move to Argentina has been a really good thing and is providing him with lots of inspiration, but I couldn't help getting this feeling that he's maybe gotten away from something more fundamentally himself. Maybe not. But, anyway, as I listened, I was thinking it would be great to hear him do some other Irish Ballads. I was thinking in particular of "Castle of Dromore" - which has always been one I'm really fond of. Then I remembered a thread we had going a while back, which was kind of fun, about Stan Rogers tunes we'd like to hear him do. I was just wondering whether anyone else, first of all, knows whether he's done any other Irish tunes and then, which ones you think he should do. I think someone mentioned "Four Green Fields" a while back - was it after 911? - - if so that was appropriate. It's another one I like a lot. I have both that one and "Castle of Dromore" (Didn't Loreena McKennitt do this one?) on an old vinyl of Irish Revolutionary Ballads. Anyway. Just a thought. Hope you are all well. Traditional songs are becoming lost within the singer-songwriter genre, imo, and I think that is too bad. Yes, they are all fabulous songwriters but some of the best moments on CD for me are those moments where a great artist can take a traditional song and make it fresh and alive. - -Adam - --- Shelley DePaul wrote: > I was just listening to Paddy's Green Shamrock > Shore(I just acquired it-so it > was the first time I'd heard it) and I was really > impressed with the delivery > (and the guitar playing) and I couldn't help > thinking that he should do more > of this type of thing. Well, one he's been known to do is Banks of The Ponchatrain, aka Lakes of Ponchatrain, but the heritage of that is somewhat questionable. They say Paul Brady learned it from Christy Moore who learned it from Mike Waterson... There are a few threads about the song on mudcat.org. I think his use of dadgad tuning is a natural tie-in for this sort of thing. Hmmm, what would I like to hear him do in a similar vein? Maybe Craigie Hill? And while it's Scottish, Burns' Now Westlin Winds, I think, would be a nice choice. jim colbert PS- Now here's one for ya, though. Why is it celtic- KELL-TICK- for music or most everything else, as in the book of Kells... but celtic- SELL-TICK- when it comes to basketball teams? Never made a damn bit of sense to me. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Feb 2003 12:45:00 -0600 From: Subject: [RS] Off-Topic (sorry) - Terrence Martin Sorry for the off-topic post, but this is the only forum of knowledgeable folk music people I know (enough ego-stroking??). Does anyone know this guy's work? I heard one song - That's the Way It Didn't Go - on Pete Fornatele's show and bought the CD Sleeper based on that. I wasn't disappointed. That's the best cut on the CD, but the rest of it is VERY good, as is the guitar and hamonica playing (I'm a sucker for good harmonica-izing). Martin has two other CDs. Question is, before I go ordering them, does anyone know how good they are and how good he is live? (somewhere on his website he mentions opening for Richard at some point, so I guess there is a connection. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
