Hopefully I'm speaking for the list when I say we were never questioning the competence of the new management or their ability to guide Richard properly... just that it was an abrupt change to suddenly hear nothing for so long "officially," except for our tour updates from Michaela. We do realize it's a transitional stage and all, switching management after a lengthy tenure with YH... but it would be kind of cool if someone checked in every now and then and kept us aprised on current and future projects, y'know? And I think if you want input and support from the list, that's an easy one... just ask...you've got some great people here, people I now consider friends whom I would likely never have met otherwise, who believe strongly in your brother's music and would love to help be a proactive part of getting the word out. And...I hardly think songwriters put out albums for home made muffins and chocolate chip cookies. Sheesh! RonD ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 18:24:37 +0000 From: "sharon g" Subject: [RS] $$$$ thanks Ron G, i can always depend on you to point out some interesting fact. Back to the reasons people put out records, there were many reasons why Courier was made in the form, it was..and why choices were made. for those who are Live Music cd fans.. The Ron who worked on the sound on Courier did the sound on Patty Larkin -a go go. i think that in criticizing dar's decision to use GREEN World tour material and live acoustic material... you also cant forget the studio dubbing of Larry Campbell to Reunion Hill or did i miss him on stage.. at some point... i know how dar's cd sells in concert and i have merched for Richard when he has said he didnt have the old cds.. or just didnt bring them with him... to sell and only has SNP with him.... the dar machine.. (patty romanoff) makes sure dar's cds and crycrycry are with her whereever she plays.. an artist has to be conscious and careful- as for the Third Crier.. Lucy has her cds all of them., the compliations of Greg brown and Dylan from redhouse and pushed her sideguy's product.. it depends on what an artist prioritzes....as for Richard's long involvement with Y/H its only been 3 years with that company... why not talk about his booking change too to Fleming from Drake...whats up with that??? sharon - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 3 months FREE*. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 16:22:55 -0500 From: Jim Colbert Subject: [RS] live (snip) >>Secondly, "Out There Live" was neither more nor less carefully planned than "Courier," and represents neither more nor less honesty in execution. If I'm in a critical mode I actually consider neither of them to be a revelation.<< (and ronD said) Have you REALLY listened to both of these albums? Are you aware of the months long discussion and input that the Richard List members had with regard to what songs would be included on "Courier"? I gotta agree with Rockin' Ronnie on this one. OTL isn't really my cup of tea... I've heard some live Dar stuff friends have shared that I thought was much better than the official live release... but Courier seemed to definately be a well-planned labor of love on the part of the parties involved. Ron is right, there was a lot of discussion and input from the list considered in the making of it. Heck, one of the reasons the Sonora Sessions happpened was the input from the list and our stubborn insistence on what tracks were essential! Those of us who are old enough to remember Frampton Comes Alive and the impact of what it did to his career, likely remember the glut of multiple-disc live sets hastily-pushed through to try to cash in on like success. Most of which, well, sucked. Hence why we think there's a difference between it being about the money, as in cashing in and striking while the iron is hot, and it being about the money, as in part of a well-planned presentation of the artist's live work designed to enable the artist to continue making a viable living at what he or she does... Moving Richard under the same "umbrella" for booking and management both simplified things and allowed greater in-house, more or less, control of things like date confirmation of shows... as you can imagine, when the artist lives in Argentina and there is an 11 hour flight involved, they need to ensure things run as smoothly as possible back here... For the record, since I've been somewhat vocal about their lack of presence here, let me also just add I've heard only good things about Mark Spector's ability as a manager and a professional. It might not be his personal style to be directly involved here on the list (and honestly, that's not something I agree with, but that's neither here nor there) but he will doubtless do a thorough and competent job of representing Richard. And not to split hairs, but Richard was with YH since 1997 up until this January, although I believe they extended the contract to June to oversee Courier release. During that tenure, he's released his three most successful albums to date, regained control of his publishing, his audience has expanded greatly... I believe Charlies's estimate was quadrupled.... anyway, I guess my point is simply stating it in years does not necessarily reflect the impact those years have had on richard's career. Jim Colbert Bellefonte PA who was surprised to not see rg mention one of my all-time favorite live albums, dylan and the band's before the flood! (And would have to offer as his top five live albums, in no particular order, courier, before the flood, stan rogers between the breaks, johnny cash at folsom prison (the first live album I ever owned!), and townes van zandt live at the old quarter. And offers that it's odd that there have never been "legit," readily-available commercial live albums by Jackson Browne or Eric Andersen... although Eric does now offer some downloadable live stuff through his web site, which is kind of a neat concept. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 19:22:59 -0800 (PST) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: [RS] Reunion Hill? > and live acoustic material... you also cant forget > the studio dubbing of Larry Campbell to Reunion Hill or did i miss him on stage.. at some point... I am curious about this too. Is Reunion Hill on Courier "live"? It sounds like a studio recording. If so, I don't think it should be part of a live album. That is my only complaint. I LOVE the Sonora Sessions cd. If we as the list had any pull to have that released then I think we helped in a small way. I heard the live "Wisteria" on WFUV and they spoke of the limited editon cd that you could get free if you bought 2 Couriers. I thought it was a great plug for Richard. Janet Yahoo! If I remember correctly, the idea behind this was to showcase "RH" in the newer, slower style, despite the fact that there was no concert recording of "RH" that was up to Richard's standard. So having it on the album fulfills the goal of showing the song the way it is done in concert, although it was not recorded live in concert. - --V ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V4 #333 ***********************************
