Absolut top 1 album I listened to most this year, e.g., is David Gray's Flesh, wich came out sometime in the 90s - I just rediscovered it this year :) here I go: Elvis Costello - when I was cruel Mr. Costello at his finest. A great rock album, innovative, full of surprises. my favorite track is the beatiful "soul for hire". Saw him live on the current tour, an absolutely amazing show. haven't been to a better rock show in a long time! Ellis Paul - speed of trees not my most favorite EP album ever, but it contains my favorite EP song - - the title track. there has been quite some talk on other lists whether the album is too produced or not, I really like the production (with one exception). Some beautiful ballads, great stories, slow songs and a rocker. A great portrait of his fine songwriting. Richard Shindell - the courier which was in last year's list, too :) counts for both years. beautiful album, need I say more ? :) Peter Mulvey - ten thousand mornings Peter continues to blow my mind with every new song I hear him do, his own or others. It's amazing how hw took these songs and not merely played them but made them his own. what a talent! Wilco - Yankee Foxtrott Hotel I didn't really get into Wilco until this year - love the album. Brilliant band, would love to finally see them live. Julian Dawson - Hillbilly Zen the return to a more acoustic side by one of my favorite UK songwriters. Very different albums from the more pop-oriented early to mid 90s. Features the wonderful Gene Parsons and contains one of the most beautiful songs of this year - shadow on the moon. Hauntingly beautiful. and some more... katrin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Nov 2002 09:54:11 +0000 From: Jennifer Coia Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V4 #312 Ronnie- If you haven't already, you should read Larry Sloman's "On the Road with Bob Dylan". It documents the Rolling Thunder Revue tour and it's a great read. jc 10 Bob Dylan - Live 1975 rolling Thunder Revue Ronnie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Nov 2002 09:46:06 EST From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: Top Ten List Blind Boys of Alabama--Higher Ground RS-Courier (is that 2002?) That being said, a few of my favorite albums released this year would include: Okay, the Courier is an obvious choice. (Note that this also made it on my list from last year, due to our pre-release copies.) Cartoon- Hubba Hubba (local band;recordings from the 80's.) while the maaterial choice is dated here and the guys have not yet come into their full strengths as songwriters, they are in peak form musically and were still having a lot of fun. www.cartoonadventures.com Tom Russell- Museum of Memories. Limited edition 30-year anthology of rarities and outtakes being sold to keep his website running and current. (I'm witholding any smart-ass comments or comparisons here... (: ) David Olney- women across the river live. I never tire of Olney, especially in a live setting. His studio works are not as consistent as they could be... Deeper Well and Eye of the Storm set quite high standards... but his writing is often amazing. Garnet Rogers- all that is. Although my personal compilation disc varies greatly from this one, it's a nice introduction to his music. Not released this year but new to me this year: Tim Flannery & friends Live. Nice, mostly gospel stuff from the former San Diego padre, an acoustic band featuring some great talent from his area. Hope to get them soon: Darryl Purpose's gift of the maggi; the new Mark Erelli; the new Peter Mulvey. Maybe the Dylan rolling thunder set, cause this was the time I started listing to Dylan, back in late junior high school... Lotta good stuff out there right now, y'know? Chris Smither's Live as I'll Ever Be and Bill Morrisey's collaboration with Greg Brown, Friend of Mine aren't from this year but they were new favorites at my house.
