Peter Mulvey covered it during his last Iron Horse show and it's not "Running up the stairs". The gist of the song is the narrator doing the same thing every day. Peter said that when he first heard the song as a teen, he thought that was the funniest thing. He played it for his parents and they cried. I tried Google searching but to no avail. Norman ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Nov 2002 18:09:45 EST From: VMacmullan@aol.com Subject: [RS] Westport, CT I went to the show last night at the Seabury Center in Westport. It's only my second time seeing Richard, so I don't have much in the way of comparison, but it was a great show. It was just himself and Lincoln Schleffer (sp?) on bass. Lori McKenna opened. I don't really know anything about her (the name is familiar, I'm sure I've heard her on FUV). She had a great voice and some real different, quirky kinda songs. She did a very nice cover of Springsteen's Once Step Up. She played for about an hour, then a brief intermission before Richard. He opened with Courier and then went into two of his new songs -- The Island and Last Fare of the Night. I don't really remember the order but the rest of the playlist included Abuelita, Fishing, Arrowhead, Kenworth, Best Western, Transit, Summer Wind/Cotton Dress, Mary Magdelene, Are You Happy Now (interrupted this with a funny story of playing it the night before at the Town Crier and finally having to quit before the end of the song because some guy in the front row painted green & orange kept yelling out YEAH after the end of every line. His description of these YEAHs coming up out of this guy like some kind of subterranean eruption was great). He did an amazing rendition of Dylan's "She Belongs to Me" (She's got everything she needs, she's an artist she don't look back....You start out standing, proud to steal her anything she sees. But you wind up peeking through her keyhole down upon your knees). Just incredible. I always thought he'd do good things with Dylan songs. He also covered a Dave Carter song after some very nice words about losing him over the summer. It was something like Our Lady of Perpetual Sadness (?? I don't know Dave & Tracy's music even though I know many people have raved about them in this group). There must have been more, but I'm not remembering them right now. He just played one longish set. His encore was "I Am". I'm hoping that it ends up on one of his future albums, it is a very touching song. He didn't have much to say between songs. But he did make one comment that I thought was kinda strange. After he opened with Courier he asked that the monitors be turned up a little. (which Lori McKenna had also asked for in her set). His comment was that all the prosperous people in the audience must be sucking up the vibes in the room. Now I may be a little sensitive about living in Fairfield County (which is extremely prosperous), but it just seemed an odd to me. It made me want to wave my hand in the air and say, "not me man -- don't include me in that group". But then I realized that compared with some of the things I'm sure he's seen in Argentina, I was part of that group. I lived in Venezuela for many years and know the extremes of poverty that you can see outside of the United States. I'm sure that traveling back & forth between the US and SA as much as he does can be dislocating at times. Please don't misunderstand me, his comment was made in a very lighthearted tone -- it was not at all nasty in any way, but it did make me pause. All in all a great time was had by all. I hope he is playing on Hartford in February, but I'd be happier if he came back to the shoreline -- maybe the Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport? Back to lurking.... virginia ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Nov 2002 20:43:48 -0500 (EST) From: VANESSA C WILLS Subject: Re: [RS] Westport, CT Thank you, Virginia for your recap of the show! :-) I love these stories. I can't wait til I get a chance to hear these new songs Richard's been doing. I heard "The Island" in July, and the melody is still with me inside my head (along with a few scattered words--"it was a package deal, everything pre-arranged . . . I went to the island, where . . ." is more or less the extent of how well memory serves me). That song is just *beautiful*. Hey, would any kind lister happen to know the lyrics? (RonG, I'm looking at you). BTW, I went to a fabulous concert last night. After years of thwarted attempts, I saw Bright Eyes (which at the moment, is Omaha, Nebraskan singer/songwriter Conor Oberst and a 12-piece acoustic band including guitar, mandolin, flute, piano, etc.). Conor is a kind of indie-rock phenom who's been making music for a long time, which frankly makes me a little ill because he's younger than I am. ::sigh:: Not to worry, though, it's not teeny music and he's no Avril Lavigne. Anyways, just thought I'd recommend him to anyone who thinks a stunningly original emo/alt-countryish singer/songwriter sounds like his/her cup of tea. You might coughdownloadcough "Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh," "Sunrise, Sunset," or "The Calendar Hung Itself" from coughKaZaAcough. - --V ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Nov 2002 22:05:20 EST From: VMacmullan@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Westport, CT I'm with you Vanessa on getting a copy of the lyrics, especially to The Island....that one really stuck with me too.
