If you love music you'll be able to catch on quick. I didn't start playing until "later in life" and it's worked out. Probably taking a few lessons is a good way to start. Someone skilled will show you the proper way to hold the guitar and get you started with the basic chord shapes. From there it's a matter of determination, work and practice. You have to build up your fingertips to stand playing. But once you do this and with the access to Ron's great site of all the music that you already know and love, you'll be having a blast in no time. I got those chords from a very well done sight: Ron's Folk Music Chords & Lyrics. It has the chords and lyrics to all of Richard's songs as well as those of other folk singer/songwriters. To tell you the truth though, I only visit that sight for the lyrics (like when I copied that part of Transit to make a point). I've always wanted to play guitar but I expect that it'll be too hard to learn (or at least take too long to get any good). How did you learn? Is it something I can pick up with the help of some instructional book or should I go through the stress of individual lessons? Anyone else's input on this would be really great too :) Thanks, Leigh ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2002 12:32:11 EDT From: Goldlainey@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V4 #232 Hi Leigh: Thanks again for the info. In answer to your questions, about playing the guitar, I played for quite a while when I was younger. I don't really know why I stopped, as it gave me incredible joy. My teacher was a Leonard Cohen devotee and we pretty much kept to that genre. Anyway about two years ago I bought a new guitar and started playing again. If you're structured enough to be able to follow instructional books or videos that's a great way to learn. There is one that I didn't mind called, "Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method." If you've never played before you should probably try "Grade 1." I personally need a body to help me out, so I started taking lessons again this past April. I am so happy that I started playing again. Anyway, I'm sure others on the list will have more insight into this than I do. But...if you have always wanted to play, you should really play. Thanks again & just pick up a guitar, Elaine ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2002 12:36:35 EDT From: Goldlainey@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V4 #231 Hi Lorrie: Thank you, thank you, thank you. I just picked my guitar up yesterday, it was at the shop getting a setup. I will try that later on, and continue to be an embarrassment to Richard. Thanks again, Elaine ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2002 13:34:53 -0700 (PDT) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: [RS] guitar learning I have been following the guitar learning thread and I have been trying to learn too. I play violin (badly) but I find that the guitar strings are so much more thicker and I am having a hard time with the frets. I know I just have to knuckle under and get my fingertips use to it. It's nice to see I'm not the only one who is interested in learning. I also have a hard time keeping the fingering for the different chords straight. I think you're ahead of the game if you've played another instrument in the past (or present!). Conditioning the fingers is one of the hardest parts, I think. I'm not sure of what kind of guitar you are learning on (nylon string or steel string), but be aware that there are different guages (thicknesses) of string sets. Sometimes you'll find different names for the sets like Ultra-Light, Extra-Light, Light, Medium, Heavy. When I started playing, my instructor recommended Ultra-Lights in the beginning. These are thinner and easier to fret (push down). When you get conditioned you'll notice that you can get more volume out of the thicker sets, so you can move up then (if you want to). Maybe have somebody check out what is on your guitar now and maybe even re-string it for you with the lightest guage available. You'll still get the conditioning, but you'll also be able to tolerate playing for longer periods of time in the beginning which will help you practice the chord shapes more often during each session. My instructor gave me a recommendation of practicing 30 minutes a day. It does not sound like much, but 30 minutes a day out of an adult's life is sometimes hard to do. I read once where Jewel practiced for 5 hours a day in her room. I wish I had the time do devote like that. So somewhere between 30 minutes and 5 hours is probably just about right.
