I've never seen her do it with such passion and urgency. It was amazing. And she dedicated the song beforehand to my daughter, Adriana. It was an amazing Dar moment. I like Peter Muvery's version alot, but this night the song belonged to its author. I had a great time hearing many great artists including Bob Dylan. Richard took the stage with the band at about one pm. Sporting the new beard, they cranked out a great set. Arrowhead Oceanview(??)- new song, very nice I Am Fishing Are You Happy Now? Transit Arrowhead rocked and got the crowd into it. He had to read the lyrics off a piece of paper to do the second tune. Very nice song. He mentioend he wrote "I Am" in early October and then immediately went inro "Fishing". These songs made a bizarrely wonderful pair. Finished off well with "Are You Happy" which the crowd seeme to know and then finished with "Transit". Vance Gilbert was MC-ing and admitted that he had written a fan letter to Richard and called him one of the very best songwriters. I caught a bit of Richard on the side stage at 3 o clock. I would of stayed for the whole set but one of my reasons of going was to see Bruce Cockburn(he was solo and absolutely amazing) so I needed to head back to the main stage. FUV's Rita Houston introduced him. he said that he streams from his new home and listens to the traffic reports. :) When I was there: The Courier God's Firing Reign(???)(new song) Kentworth of My Dreams Next Best Western The new song was amazingly good. About a small town where earthquakes hit. I think it's time for him to record a new album now cause I want a copy of these songs. :) As for the rest of the festival, it was fabulous. Dylan on Saturday night and many great performances by Richard, an african singer, Natalie Mcmaster, Blind Boys of Alabama, Bruce Cockburn, Vance Gilbert, Dar Williams, and Arlo Guthrie. If there are Dar fans here, she played solo which was nice and played many new songs. She has a new album coming out and the songs she's played from it sound very good. - -Adam Yahoo! Happy Birthday, Richard Shindell. I'm awfully glad you're around, and that you chose to do what you do with your life. Moments of transcendence are not easy to come by these days; thank you for the many that your music provides. That must have been a trip. I saw mention of Larry Campbell in reference to Dylan's return. Larry played with Dylan. Did he also play with Richard? Sounds like it might have been the Gram Parsons song, "Sin City," which RS has covered before: the chorus: This old earthquake's gonna leave me in the poorhouse It seem like the whole world's insane On the 31st floor, a gold-plated door Won't keep out the Lord's burning rain." - - eric ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Aug 2002 17:01:46 -0400 From: "Norman A. In the midst of the debate to cover or not to cover, I have a very insignificant question. I personally get a little quesy when I hear a cover, but that is my humble opinion. And, for sure, there are many "worthy" covers. Anyway, I had an extra ticket for Dar on Friday night at the IMAC Theatre in Huntington. I wasn't sure if I was "allowed" to ask if anyone wanted the ticket. I would not have asked for money, the only cost would have been that someone had to sit next to me. I frequently have extra tickets because at the time I think it would be nice to have some company. But, in reality I really enjoy listening to music by myself. I know that it would be fine to have any of you come with me, as we all have such a passion for this music. So, please let me know if it's okay to ask. I will never ask for money, it's not my way. Dar was wonderful on Friday night. The Nields opened for her and they were good, as well. The best part though, was that Dar signed CD's at the end, and I got to talk to her. I think she is magnificent, and so incredibly humble. Anyway, it made my year! I have tickets for Richard's Oct. performance already, so you might hear from me again in Oct. And if, on this earth i hear a cover song i dont believe has been done justice...I just let it be. np. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V4 #219 ***********************************
