Great songs are meant to evolve and be interpreted so if there is a Dave Carter salute/tribute/CD compilation let it be from so many wonderful performers out there. A "Nod to Bob" had no songs from the Master craftsman Dylan. Why is Dave Carter any different? I agree. There are songs where I'm just really partial to the original or maybe even a cover version by another artists that has always been THE interpretation of a particular song for me. But I'm always blown away when I hear somebody covering a song I had linked to somebody else before and all of a sudden it's a completely different song, a different way to approach it I had never thought about, the story with a different spin and a new life. That's brilliant, I love it, when that happens. Dar's the Ocean - I know i have said that before - but man, when Peter does that song, that's it for me. That's the song. Brilliant, in all it's darkness and edginess and it's a very different song than Dar's. Actually Peter's new album has many such "wow - I had no idea the song could be like that"-moments for me, I love that element of surprise. I think, strictly speaking for me, every song in the world should be there to be covered. I might like the cover or I might not, but it's something put out in the world for others to take and give it a try. Whether something good or not so good comes out of that is in the eye of the beholder. But songs are not set in stone for me, there is always an element of development, they grow on after they are written, grow through the artists who wrote them or through others. That's much of the beauty of music for me. my two cents, for what it's worth. Katrin, who, BTW, just learned to play "when I go". what an incredible, amazing, touching song. beautiful beyond words. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Aug 2002 10:48:00 -0700 From: "Susan Krauss" Subject: [RS] FS: Joan Baez tickets 8/27/2002 (Wente Vineyard/Livermore CA) (Sorry for those who are not in the area but I thought some folks here might be interested - and sorry if you see this more than once!) I have two tickets for Joan Baez at Wente Vineywards in Livermore on Tuesday, August 27th for sale. Her show at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga is sold out. Note: Richard is NOT opening for her on this date (he must have some family thing because he's opening on every other show this week). These are Terrace Seats Row B (no dinner) and I'm selling them for cost - $118 (I'll pick up the fees). I'm sorry to miss this show but I also have Bruce Springsteen tickets for that night at Joan tours a lot more than Bruce! susan in alameda Note new email address: sekrauss@attbi.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Aug 2002 14:09:20 -0700 From: "Sandra J. It's also on Dar's live album- Out There Live. On the MC version, John Prine has backing vocals at the end. Peter is Peter Mulvey. When Dar played at the Iron Horse last December, Pete came on stage. He played guitar on "The Ocean" while he and Dar traded verses. It was the highlight of that show. At Falcon Ridge a couple of years ago, though, she performed what I thought was a transcending rendition of the song. I've since seen Peter perform it twice on his own since and it took the song to a level that Dar's "Mortal City" version (as much as I like that take) didn't approach.
