I bought the "When I Go" cd tonight at Borders. I was pretty surprised they had their cds too! That is the perfect song and I think Richard and Lucy would do it justice! Janet - --- "Norman A. It's inevitable in the wake of Dave's passing that all sorts of tribute ideas will spill forth, with all kinds of suggestions as to what artists will be perfect for performing various Dave Carter songs. It's also inevitable that *someone* will lay claim to "Kate and The Ghost of Lost Love". It's my opinion that this very special song be left alone. OR that the original Dave-and-Tracy version be part of the tribute. "Why?" you might ask. What is the point in fooling with perfection? Not only is the song one of the finest songs *ever* written, but the performance of the song as it exists on "When I Go" cannot be improved upon in any way. Any rendition - -- including one performed by Richard and Lucy -- would not measure up. If the point of a tribute album would be to further the audience of Dave Carter (and Tracy Grammer), then certainly the original version would be suitable for that purpose. It's more than the fact that Dave's plaintive, Okie voice fits that of the "poor wandrin' soul" or that Tracy's fits that of Kate; it's more than the fact that this is simply the original version; it's more than the fact that Tracy's note selection and violin's tone are perfect complements to the words; it's more than the fact that the union of Dave's voice with Tracy's at "toll" / "rolls" is one of the most amazing moments in all of music that I have ever heard. It's all of these things *and* the simple fact that it just doesn't get any better than this. It's one thing for performers (well known or otherwise) to sing this song as a cover in concert, and quite another to put it down on record -- whether as a tribute or not. Obviously, the more people who record the song (and subsequesntly pay royalties), the more benefit that Tracy (assuming that she is the legal beneficiary of Dave's royalties now) will receive. How can I argue against that? I can't. As tributes go, however, there's but one way to give the song itself its due . . . use the original recording and let the perfection speak for itself. I think I'd be happy hearing them do Cat Eyed Willie, another verse swapping song, (there is bloodshed in that, after all) instead. Of course, if they were to do anything, I'm sure I'd love what ever tribute they offered. Nancy (who still can't bring herself to post to the *other* D&T list about Dave) It was a love so big that it filled his heart 'Til it swelled and finally burst apart And where the love spilled out they called it art But he never really had no choice. Not Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky. Not Kris Delmhorst and Mark Erelli. No one. Like Jackie Robinson's #42, it should be retired unless/until Dave comes back to sing it himself.
