So I was listening to WFUV out of New York City and a promo comes on: '" Hi. This is John Platt. You know I once asked Joan Baez which of today's younger singer-songwriters she considered to be the equal of Bob Dylan in terms of songwriting talent. And she said Richard Shindell and Dave Carter." Mr. Platt then goes on to explain that Dave and Tracy will be his guests on this Sunday morning's show, which is always good. His show runs from 8am to 11am Sunday mornings, and the "live guest" is usually featured in the 10am to 11am timeslot. ( Technically, I think the "live" guests are usually on tape. ) WFUV webstreams at www.wfuv.org . On the Richard Shindell front, there is an article all about the Asbury Park waterfront ( of my youth and probably some of yours ) that can be found here: http://www2.bostonherald.com/lifestyle/travel/asbu07142002.htm The article refers to the "cultural icons" of Bruce Springsteen songs. IMHO, by far, the song with the most direct references to Asbury Park is "Sandy". Seems to me some one I know of recently recorded an excellent cover of that song. They say Asbury Park is on its way back. Good to hear. The last time I was there it was very depressing. The boardwalk was in visable disrepair, the amusment park- casino thingy was long closed, the "tilt-a-wirl on the south beach drag" was long gone, and not a trace was left. I think Madame Marie was still there. Anyway... some good news about Asbury Park. And, of course, Bruce will be appearing live from Asbury Park on the Today Show on July 30th ( as a way of promoting Dar Williams live free appearance at the World Financial Center that night). see ya.... I bought "The Courier" but didn't buy two copies of it, so I didn't get the bonus cd. Thanks for any help. Jason ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 01:26:17 -0400 From: "Norman A. Johnson" Subject: [RS] Diamond in the rough/ Dave and Tracy. Howie wrote about Rachael B Davis >> OK, I have to say a few words about Rachael. The good news AND the bad news is that she has more talent than she knows what to do with! I think it will be exciting to follow her as she moves on. "Diamond in the rough" is an understatement because she has SO MANY directions she can go. Ever felt a bit envious when someone has said, "I saw so-and-so back when they were an opener and there were 20 of us in the audience."? << ITA. I saw her open for Susan Werner not long ago. Wow- what a voice!! Susan was very impressed and said that she was reminded of when she first heard of Dar (when Dar opened for her in '94). Ob. Dave and Tracy comment- I heard them in Huntington last week. The big news is that they have an incredible new song called "Mother I climbed". There were a couple references to Richard- someone while introducing them said that Joan had said that the two best songwriters today are Dave Carter and Richard Shindell. Dave mentioned Richard singing along on "The Mountain" and said something like "I love that guy".
