And... you will laugh if you recall my initial reaction -- I find I'm listening to "I Am" the same way. Perhaps Richard should have stayed in the ministry. He does a good job. "Next Best Western" is indeed a quintessential Richard song and would be a strong contender, except that it keeps me company in depression rather than bringing me out of it! and congrats. Here's another tull fan, but let me qualify: EARLY Jethro Tull. After years of dutifully going to their concerts and buying the albums, I finally decided they were going someplace I wasn't intersted. So I guess my favorite Tull stuff dates primarily from the pre-CD era. I just totally love both the lyrics and music of both of those, and I often can't get them out of my head. > During last week's Dar chat I learned > not to ask, "Is anyone going to see Richard in Shirley on July > 12?", On that note, is it dreadfully off-topic to ask if anyone's going to see Dar in Williamsburg next week? I wish Richard would come to central Virginia. I talked to one of the owners of Ashland Coffee and Tea, where Lucy has performed twice recently and Dar is performing next week (but I can't go to that one as I have a class). I'm hoping she'll be able to get him one of these days. I'd have to agree with someone else who said "Transit," in part because it is about contemporary society and details a situation *everyone* can relate to. I think so many anti-folk folks think we're all about old ballads or protest songs, and RS often goes against that stereotype. As for RS converting, I did it recently. A friend of mine, known for her love of rock, went to a concert with me of a folk performer. She loved the concert and wanted to know about others. So I made her an 80 minute CD. It contained 18 songs, each other by another contemporary folk singer. For Richard Shindell, I picked "Summer Wind Cotton Dress" and she loved it and went out and bought "The Courier". A friend from high school, who I went to about 3 Richard shows with, first heard "Abuelita" and then heard Jess Line covering "Fleur-de-Lis" and was hooked. I think "Transit" is the best written song he has and has a rock-ish feel. I would have to disagree about everyone understanding the song. I saw Richard play it in Mt Kisko NY and Londonderry NH in the same weekend. :) In NY they understood it. The reaction to me was less understanding in New Hampshire. And Richard commented on that during the NY show. But a great song to let people hear. "Confession" would work too, as it is catchy. I find "Before You Go" a good one too...nice electric guitar; good use of his voice. - -Adam - -----Original Message----- From: Deb Woodell To: shindell-list@smoe.org Sent: 6/19/02 11:35 AM Subject: Re: [RS] ? I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that there are a few folks who are fans of both Richard Shindell and Jethro Tull; after all, there are some decidedly folkish tendencies in some eras of Jethro Tull's music. Ian seems pretty fond of acoustic pieces, too. Sadly, I had to pass up going to see Tull this year, since tickets were expensive, and Ian's voice simply isn't what it used to be (but just hearing him play flute almost makes up for it). Fortunately, I did get to see Richard last month, and brought along my folks, who became immediate Richard Shindell fans. :) Ben On Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at 01:55 AM, shindell-list-digest wrote: > It's funny that another Shindell fan is also a big Jethro Tull > fan...me too!
