Richard was wonderful... as usual. I love his new look with the neat-and-trim facial hair. Someone in the audience said he looked like Hemingway. Richard responded "Earnest, I presume." The audience chuckled. Richard's guitar playing is impeccable. At one point in the show he was very focused on tuning the guitar. He apologized to the audience for taking extra time for the tuning... and someone in the back yelled out "We appreciate that!" Yes, I think we do. Who else can play the guitar like that? The opening act was Amy Rigby. I was pleasantly surprised as I had not heard her music before... and found myself enjoying her humor and easy style. She is worth checking out. Apparently she had been on Conan Obrien's show a night or two earlier and had a few new fans amongst the Richard crowd. During the break between Amy and Richard's performances, I was at the counter near the List sign up sheets. Richard came down the stairs and was very focused, obviously looking for something very important. McCabe's is a small shop and when filled with concert goers it can be hard to navigate around all the bodies. It became clear that Richard needed to get to something on the counter behind the list sign up. I made a space for him so he could get through... it looked like it was some sheet music he was looking for (I think). He got it quickly, then ran up the stairs to prepare for his set. It was the highlight of the evening for me as Richard spoke to me as he acknowledged my making a small space for him. He's really quite a polite guy. The show itself was fantastic. It was being recorded for later play on KPFK and other radio stations. I think Richard's performance of Reunion Hill and Blue Divide were the best I've ever heard. I also enjoyed his introduction to Transit and his reference to the L.A. traffic. He said it had taken him less time to get from northern CA to the edge of Los Angeles (about 5 hours plus) than it had from the edge of L.A. to McCabe's. I could totally relate to this. I drove 4 hours to get to McCabe's from my home in San Luis Obispo on the cental coast. The drive from the 405 to "the 10" was just as Richard described it... and much like the song itself. And a footnote: When I left McCabe's, I got in the car and started driving back on the freeway, listening to some of Richard's songs. It was late. It was dark. I was tired. About halfway to my destination I noticed something flapping on my front windshield, but I was on the freeway and had no interest in pulling over. A little while later something flew off the windshield, and something remained. Much later, I found a blue envelope on the windshield with the address to "City of Santa Monica, Parking Citations." The parking ticket itself was long gone having blown off on the freeway. After several phone calls, voice mails, and attempts to reach a human being... I gave my license plate number and learned that I had received TWO citations that evening. One for parking in a "permit only area" and another for not having my front license plate (on my new hybid car). All in all... it was more than worth it, of course. Richard Shindell is just the very best out there! So don't miss your chance to see him perform live. I look forward to Richard's return to California... and make a special request for a show on the central coast! Santa Cruz is on the Central Coast. He played a great show there on 5/5. There were tickets available and the drive up from San Luis Obispo is beautiful. Not only that, you wouldn't have had to deal with LA traffic! Peter ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V4 #155 ***********************************
