I am only an ignorant college student but I work for IT at it. A little virus advice: You should update your virus protection as odten as possible. Evety new virus tries to prevent itself from being detected. Updates help protect you. Norton 2002 and McAfee 2002 are the best. McAfee, IMHO, is slightly better but both do the job. If you are on a network, be even more careful. - -Adam - -----Original Message----- From: RockinRonD@aol.com To: shindell-list@smoe.org Sent: 5/12/02 7:19 AM Subject: [RS] Hey Norton! All attachments are automatically scrubed when they pass thru the server The list of members to most lists on the server are closed. Some owners allow access to list members only. What you are experiencing is an e-mail worm. Depending on the variation, these things can be harmless, or could damage your hard drive, or could allow unauthorized access to your computer. They can also automatically send data (including e-mail) when you connect to the net. The worms' primary source of addresses is Microsoft Outlook's address book, so anyone who has ever used this client to mail to you may be (unwittingly,, i.e. without their knowledge) sending the virus on to you. The worm also frequently spoofs the return address, so you can't easily tell where it came from. Some worms scan incoming e-mail and even web pages for e-mail addresses to send to or to spoof as an addy. For example, my lead singer got mail from her account on our homepage, which is impossible since this is a simple mail forward address. After investigation, we discovered that her home computer was infected, sending to her work account, and spoofing her forwarding address as the sending location. Kind of amounts to shooting yourself in the foot, huh :-) Practice safe e-mail. Get anti-virus software. And if you get an attachment over 20kb in size that *you were not expecting* don't open it. And consider this, although the new bugs, especially Klez and it's variants, are bad enough for folks with one or two addresses, consider the poor listowners who have several addresses attached to their name for each list. Last week I averaged over a dozen Klez mails a day. Charlie Sweeney multiple list owner PS: you might consider using a mail client other that Outlook. Pegasus is free and does things that Outlook won't do, like automatically send plain text unless you tell it to do otherwise. All of the emails have been similar in that there is no message and two attachments. Sometimes there is something in the subject line, sometimes not. Our computer center checked it out and it is the virus W32/Klez.h@mm. This virus allows the sender to put in any "from" name he or she wants, so it might appear to be from someone you know or might do business with. For instance, I work in the president's office at a university, and one e-mail was addressed from another university president and one from a library. You can find more information about this and other viruses and virus hoaxes at www.mcafee.com. For gratuitous Richard content, I'm glad to see the tour reviews are good. I was disappointed with the Huntington show and thought maybe he was worn out from the tour, but now I think the show being broadcast live kept things "by the book." Plus the fact there there seems to have been an increase in drunkenness and rudeness at all the concerts we've been to lately. Why do people pay so much for tickets and then talk through the whole show?!
