I come back from our honeymoon to find out rs sang a george jones song in pittsburgh (a show we normally would have gone to if we hadn't been, um, getting married the next day!) Good tune- didn't Elvis Costello cover that years ago when he did his country record in the early 80's? It was either on the record or it was an outtake that showed up later somewhere. Times certainly have changed. The quality of Richard's songwriting, however, remains among the best I have ever heard. What Richard does with a first person narrative far surpasses that done by any of his peers, possibly with the notable exception of Bill Morrissey. Richard is in a league with Flan O'Connor, O'Henry, and Hemingway (along with contemporary writers like Russell Banks). Because I have a two-month-old son, I have made the choice to spend as much time with him as possible, foregoing shows at the Tin Angel and even the opportunity to see Trey Anastasio's new band this summer. Hopefully, I will be seeing Richard, with my children, at some time in the future. Oh yeah, one more thing, the word "inbred," is kind of classist, isn't it? If Richard is reaching an audience with its own compliment of obnoxiousness, it only means that he is reaching a wider audience. Granted these people may need to be reminded that they are not the only people at the show, and that everyone would appreciate the opportunity to hear, but let us rejoice at the ever growing number of people choosing to reject the minimally talented corporate performers and instead seek something with some depth. - ---Jerry Gillespie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2002 11:50:30 -0400 From: Vanessa Christina Wills Subject: [RS] Re: Hmm . . . there doesn't seem to be anything inherently classist about the word "inbred," as it is used as frequently to refer to the gnarly family trees of some rural citizens as it is used to refer to royal families. Now the _use_ of the word "inbred" in a particular instance--that's something different. Anyway, I thought I'd reply cuz I had been having thoughts among the same line. I mean, how much of a grudge can I really hold against a woman clamoring for "Cold Missouri Waters"? At least she had taste in music. - --V Jerry Gillespie wrote: >Oh yeah, one more thing, the >word "inbred," is kind of classist, isn't it? Actually the word "Inbred" was the kindest word I could think of at the time. Moron, pathetic, cretin all seem applicable now. It's great that people are listening to decent music like Richard, Tom Pacheco and Rod Picott et al but are they actually listening or just using it as back ground music having wandered into the room to meet friends etc and been stung for $15 or whatever the charge. It does happen over here and at one TP gig he was asked to turn it down as they were finding it difficult to talk "over the noise" !! At least there are a few of us willing to keep on supporting good live music. I've got TP again this week followed by a couple of good local bands and Tom Paxton a few weeks later. It was only after they asked what it meant I told them. The did get the point though as they fell stony silent thereafter. It was just so annoying that these blokes were shouting "Go on" which over here is an over used expression for virtually everything but in this case it was used after virtually every few lines Tom sang, in between songs and after songs. They were also sat right in the middle and would get up and go to the bar one after the other. Alan Who do you know who has had Cancer ? Moron, pathetic, cretin all seem applicable now Alan, I apologize; I didn't mean to offend, and if it was me in a similar situation, I don't know that I would be so kind. I guess it was just my morning rant. In my rush to be inclusive (must be reading too much Michael Moore!) I may be forgetting that the people who really enjoy Richard's work don't have too many opportunities to see him, and when they do, it is kind of special. No one has the right to ruin their enjoyment of the evening. On the other hand, that is just another part of seeing Richard and might make a decent short story or something. Who knows? Anyway, sorry bout that ): ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V4 #139 ***********************************
