(he he, there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers. Just kidding, of course!) "I am" had been available for paid download through Richard's website, http://www.richardshindell.com/; with the proceeds helping to replace one of the radio towers that had been on top of the trade centers. (Anyone know how that fund raising went?) You'll also find there are a few lines Richard sings live that are not on the downloaded version. I see it's no longer on the news page though, so I'm guessing it is no longer available for purchase? So here's one I was thinking about last night. Those of you who didn't buy your RS discs as they came out- what order did you pick them up in? Any particular reason? Having heard Richard on old Fast Folk discs, I started with SP when it came out. Then C3. Then SNP. We finally saw Richard live and I ordered BD and RH at the same time the next day. (I can't remember why I didn't get either at the concert itself; that's something I normally would have done.) Then I got the Spring EP, still thirsting for more. Then Courier, ordered online sometime in the wee hours of the day it became available... well, technically 4 couriers, three for gifts but I kept both bonus discs. I think I mentioned before BD's cover art didn't really intrigue me quite enough to buy it sound-unseen, so to speak- and remember, we don't have a WFUV here, nor is ithis a place rs is likely to play. So had I heard some of the tracks or seen a live show, that might have changed everything! Anyway, listening to C3 got me real interested again, so I asked for SNP for Christmas or my birthday, not sure which. From there, it was all downhill- or is that uphill? It was something of a jolt to go from SP to SNP- my first listen to SNP I was a little overwhelmed. There was a lot going on sonically, a lot of textures- had I bought the discs in order I would have felt a smoother seque from the more or less straight-forward SP through the adding of alternate tunings and more esoteric instrumentation, etc. I didn't really see a huge difference lyrically, which is often so evident, but I think that's because he raised the bar there so high with SP- I mean, overall those songs mesh seamlessly with more recent ones when he does them live, and that's an accomplishment, to me. jpc somewhere near mount nittany ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 08:27:39 -0800 (PST) From: Deb Woodell Subject: Re: [RS] purchasing order Jim asked, > So here's one I was thinking about last night. Those > of you who didn't buy your RS discs > as they came out- what order did you pick them up > in? Any particular reason? The first thing I bought was Cry3, because that's what WXPN in Philly was playing at the time. Followed by "Somewhere Near Paterson," because WXPN began playing that. I "appropriated" a taped copy of Reunion Hill, because a friend at work loved it and raved about it, then bought what was available at the the time at the local Borders: in order, "Blue Divide" and "Sparrows Point." Then bought "Courier" when it became available online. No particular reason for the order, except the first two, since they were my first intros to Richard. The others were bought as I found them -- and had the $$ for them. Deb ===== You can take the rock band away from the girl and think you've tamed her. But, she'll just pick up an acoustic, give you that innocent little girl grin, quietly laugh and say? "Nevah!" Yahoo! I then bought Sparrow's Wing and Blue Divide. I actually opted not to but "Reunion Hill" after hearing a copy of it my friend had. (Sorry, it's not really my favorite.) I also never bought Cry Cry Cry only because Williams and Laplansky just arent my cup of tea. Then I bought "Somewhere Near Patterson" the day it came out. I was anticipating it after hearing him play 4 tracks of it live in concert. Then I ordered "The Courier" and the special EP. - -Adam - -----Original Message----- From: jim colbert To: shindell-list@smoe.org Sent: 3/20/02 8:50 AM Subject: [RS] purchasing order Good to see a few new names popping up here... In a word, FANTASTIC! After one month in the stores, Courier is outselling SNP (Richard's previous best seller), by 30%. It's averaging over 800 sold per week according to Soundscan. We were intially concerned about how the two month window that we gave the fans for web site sales would effect the retail side, but it has had no down side at all. Usually live albums have a harder time getting airplay, but again Courier is surpassing our expectations. The album is currently #11 on the Americana chart and #21 on the AAA chart. It's getting great reviews, too. Go Richard!
