Some that come to mind: Jimmy LaFave - Forever Young(his CD Trail is full of Dylan covers) Arlo Guthrie - Don't Think Twice It's Alright; Walkin Down the Line Tom Lando and the Paperboys: All Along the Watchtower Black 47: Like a Rolling Stone Dan Bern: Freight Train BLues(Dylan didnt write it but he made it famous) Pamela Means: Maggie's Farm Fairport Convention: Percy's Song Kelly Joe Phelps: See That My Grave is Kept Clean(traditional but Phelps version is superior to the more famous Dylan version) Uncle Tupelo: Song to Woody Indiago Girls: Tangled Up in Blue Martin Simpson: Boots of Spanish Leather 2) Songs were the covers are better: Susan Werner - Standing in My Own Way (Dana Cooper) Garnet Rogers - This Shirt (Mary Chapin Carpenter) Peter Mulvey - Whole of the Moon (Waterboys) Joel Cage - Streets (U2) and Whole Night Sky (Bruce Cockburn) - In both cases, I also love the orginal but the way cage plays it is what draws me to say its better. Vance Gilbert - Imagination (Billie Holiday) Only because he mimicks her and all the instruments :) Kelly Joe Phelps: Goodnight Irene (Leadbelly) Also, I like Richard Shindell's studio version of "Cold Missouri Waters" better but Keelaghan's live performance of the song is the ultimate version. - -Adam - -----Original Message----- From: LBECKLAW@aol.com To: shindell-list@smoe.org Sent: 3/19/02 10:28 AM Subject: [RS] Re: under the covers To jump into the fray and answer my own question: I prefer Eva Cassady's "Fields of Gold" to Sting's (quel sacrilege!) I prefer Lucy Kaplansky's "Broken Things" to Julie Miller's (sacrilege #2) I prefer Cry Cry Cry's "Mary M" to Richard's (uh oh, better run for cover) Whoever wrote here that most covers of Dylan songs are better than the original--so true! Although I love Dylan as a songwriter/poet, I've seen him in concert twice and thought he sounded like he'd inhaled helium. A while back I saw a concert at Madison Square Garden in NYC where everyone showed up to pay tribute to Bob, and sang his songs--that's where I realized his stuff was better covered by just about anybody else. At the recent Joan B./Richard concert I went to, I thought Joan did a great version of "Baby Blue," even to the point of a killer imitation of "Bobby." Has Richard S. ever covered Dylan, d'ya know? I was reluctant to post that one, but yes, I prefer Richard's version to Dar's. His voice (to me) is just so much more haunting in that song than Dar's. But that's just me. I was thinking about what song I like Dar's version better than the original, but I've got to admit I really haven't heard Dar do very many covers, just by herself I mean, not as Cry3. >> > I saw Peter and Dar do "The Ocean" together-- trading verses > with Pete on > guitar. Laura wrote: > I prefer Lucy Kaplansky's "Broken Things" to Julie Miller's (sacrilege #2) oh yes! I forgot about that. count me in. And also Lucy's version of Mary Magdalene. Sorry, Richard... :) a while back we had this dicussion about how different the Mary Magdalens in Lucy's and Dar's versions of the song are. I like them both, they're both interesting characters (the Marys). Lucy's I find darker. I like dark :) Katrin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 16:32:46 -0500 From: Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V4 #100 Brian... There was a time when I could have told you this right off the top of my head, but....those days are gone...(Speaking of "Those Days", I also prefer 10,000 Maniac's version of Those Days to Jackson Browne's original. :-) It was recorded on one of their singles though, and on their video, "Time Capsule" there is a shot of Natalie, Michael Stipe, and Billy Bragg doing a live version of Hello In There at some European Festival. I'll let you know if I find it. That would be The Big Day festival in Glasgow in June 1990. Which, as Katrin would no doubt assert, is indeed in Europe! :-p Hello In There is on the CD single of Eat For Two. Incidentally, for me, Dubstar's cover of St Swithin's Day wins out over Bragg's original. Count me in on the Peter Mulvey version of The Ocean too! It also has the song Wildwood Flower and a really nice acoustic version of Gun Shy. Patti Smith has a retrospective/compilation album out this month with a previously unreleased version of Prince's When Doves Cry. I've heard it a couple of times on the radio and think it's far better than Prince's original. I like all of Richard's covers better than the originals. Joan Baez's cover of Fishing sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. Peter ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 18:42:32 -0500 From: "Norman A. These are all blown out of the water by Lucy's Mary Magadlen. Where Dar's Mary is world-weary, Lucy's is seductive and angry.
