I think many of us miss what is obvious to others sometimes, y'know? Took me a while to understand that there were two couriers, then it was so painfully obvious that I shake my head just thinking about it. And for the record, having owned most of the discs (it took me a long time to buy blue divide, for some reason...and I'm not sure part of that wasn't based on the cover art not intriguing me much- and of course here being here, I had heard no songs off of the disc to otherwise pique my interest) but knowing virtually no background info on richard, I didn't even know why he had moved to Argentina when I subbed to the list last year. Like my semi-retired boss says, We don't know what we don't know. Course, he's 68 and still toking like he did at the jazz clubs in the city in the fifties, so he's, well, prone to wax simply and philosophically every now and then. > > Surely I have raised the ignorance bar, if only a wee bit. I figured there were a lot folks here who would know if one didn't mind answering. And I do think (if I might wax a bit philosophical myself) I'm way more prone to ask questions that I might think are dumb, now that I'm older and don't know much. As opposed to when I was, like, 24 or so, I knew everything then. I only knew shanachie, btw, because I looked it up when the guy at the record store I used to go to and I were wondering how the heck ya pronounced that one, too, incidentally! jim colbert heading somewhere near pittsburgh tonight. happy happy joy joy, the left half of I-80 in PA. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Mar 2002 09:26:43 -0700 From: "Bill Chmelir" Subject: [RS] Farewell to the Gold Joe Moorehouse Wrote: >I, too, would love to get a recording of the first of these (actually titled >"The Lakes of Pontchartrain"), but have never heard of "Farewell to the >Gold." Is it another traditional song, or something more recent? Joe, "Farewell to the Gold" is an adventurous gold pan prospecting song set in New Zealand, written by Paul Metser. As some of the other folks on the list have said, the only recording of the song I've ever heard is by Nic Jones. Farewell is another in the long list of classic covers that Richard has chosen to perform. I'd rank it up there with Sonora's Death Row, Cold Missouri Waters and Paddies Green Shamrock Shore. Richard and James Keelaghan played it as an encore at each of the 4 shows I saw last February in Hartford, Philly and Washington D.C. I thought for sure that their duet would have made it onto Courier given the close timing proximity of those shows to the shows where the recording took place. So no one has a recording of Richard playing Farewell to the Gold? Cheers, Bill - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Can I pick the list's collective brain for a moment? We're about to put together a compilation CD of Young/Hunter artists to send to music supervisors (the folks who decide what music goes into films and tv shows). If you had to pick 4 Richard songs that you think would work best in film, what would you choose? Discuss on list, please (so everyone can be involved!)... Anyways, if you happen to be at that Borders, or have absolutely nothing better to do tonight, you could come hear us sing intermittently between 8 and 10 pm! Of course, I will chide you for not being in New Brunswick listening to Richard, but what the hey. - --V - -- Niles: I used to think they [the back-row hooligans] were mean. This is tough, because so many of his songs tell specific stories. But I've always thought "Darkness, Darkness" would work well on a soundtrack. Their set was also too short. >> My Sister Nancy and I were at the Morristown show last night as well. Funny, I thought she may have already made a post, but I see she has not. Richard's set was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay, waaaaaaaaaaaay too short and he seemed rushed as did most of the rest of the show. He is wonderful...what more can you say. Although he did appear to be tired) Dave and Tracy deserved to have more time for their own set as well. They are wonderful and I still loathe the idea of them getting billed as part of the "band"..... I had the sense as they played / sang with Joan that they were toning it all down in deference to Joan. Tracy absolutely sparkled on her vocals and mando playing especially... Dave is amazing, say no more! Hard to tell if Joan was being smug or if she was just trying to be "cute-sy"... a few times I felt myself being rubbed the wrong way. It was an enjoyable concert, but would have been better as a shared bill between D&T and Richard! cynically yours, Fran ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V4 #73 **********************************
