For someone who wasn't there, the question sounds not unlike those many of us have asked e.g. "but that song Mary Magdalen what does it MEAN?" etc. -- UNLESS the question was genuinely the person's attempt to seem superior and intellectual, let it be. For taht matter, even if it was, 10 to 1 it was this awful thing that comes over you when you admire someone and want to impress him and wind up making an idiot out of yourself. (there is a ghastly story about ME at the Iron Horse too, different artist, and some years back, which still makes me blush.) Also, richard's choice to be enigmatic is downright teasing at times, there he is kidding around and then up comes yet another deep, emotionally draining, what-is-the-meaning-of-life kind of song and you DO want to say "but Richard, what are you getting at? EXPLAIN!" some of us are literal minded, that's all! ramble over -- lisa davis ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2002 22:08:04 -0500 From: patrick t power Subject: [RS] Syracuse This was gleaned from the Joan Baez site (originally published by the Post Standard) . . . full review of the Syracuse whow is at http://baez.woz.org/tourreviews.html. "Shindell opened the night with a forthright set that featured his sturdy writing, singing and guitar work. He got into the war song mode, too, with "Arrowhead," a touching tune he wrote revolving around a young southern Civil War soldier writing his mother. His "Transit," a winding piece centered on a road trip through his native state of New Jersey, was sharp and humorous. Shindell concluded his set with a wonderful version of Simon and Garfunkel's "America." His interpretation was surprisingly faithful to, and measured up to the standard of, Simon's glorious rendition." In this case, though, the question was asked *in the middle of the set*. That's what, in most of our opinions, makes it untenable. jeff. - -- "And then one day they stopped asking. How presumptuious is it for anyone in an audience to assume that everyone else wants to hear the answer to that or any other question? Further, to put it like that "please elaborate". Sounds like an essay question on a high school history exam. Not only was this man disruptive but he was also a bit suggestive. Then someone yelled out- "hey where did you get your degree" Lucy answered yeshiva U in the bronx. (she got cheers for the bronx) Then lucy mentioned crycrycry and singing with richard and mentioned she ran into richard in laguadia airport recently and commented about his beard. some man in the audience decided to tell Lucy that Richard is working 4 nights a week and is working hard. when did musical events become interactive, i guess the VCR and DVD brought films and music into our livingrooms and some people believe they can behave that way in theaters i think that richard and Lucy both have benefitted from crycrycry in different ways. i think they both have become more spontaneous and comfortable on stage. maybe working without a net helps a bit. one can not negate that richard also worked with a mistress at her craft, Joan Baez, the early reviews are three hours and change of entertainment full sets by all parties and alots of collarboration. i get to see the show twice sharon There's a gypsy down on Bleecker Street I went in to see her as a kind of joke And she lit a candle for my love luck And eighteen bucks went up in smoke ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 02:51:30 -0500 From: Elwestrand Subject: Re: Re: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V4 #58 I'll leave > >that to Vanessa, Delores and Sandy (new lurker - where are you > >Sandy, -cmon introduce yourself)! > > > >E > > Oh, no - I've been "outed" as a lurker! Thanks, E. Gosh Sandy, you made that way too easy. I've been trying to get Delores to post for at least six months. Or is it more Delores (who probably doesn't reply cause I think I am misspelling her name!)? Maybe she will post a review after she stalks RS across CA. Probably not ;-)!
