Spring, as realised by Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman, is available on their limited edition One CD from the recently mentioned Fish Records (www.fishrecords.co.uk). Jay Lustig gave the album 3.5 stars. He wrote, "The songs on this live album are filled with vividly sketched characters, but veteran singer-songwriter- guitarist Shindell isn't really a storyteller. He's more interested in who his subjects are than in what they're doing. "Fishing" is a portrait of a seedy immigration agent that will make your skin crawl. "The Ballad of Mary Magdalen" puts a modern slant on an ancient story, from Mary Magdalen's point of view ("Jesus loved me, this I know/Why on earth did I ever let him go?"). Truckers ("The Next Best Western," "The Kenworth of My Dreams") and everymen struggling to make their peace with war ("Arrowhead," "Reunion Hill," "The Courier") are Shindell's specialties. This album -- which is currently available through the Web site www.signature-sounds.com but will not be in stores until Feb. 12 -- was recorded at four different shows, including one at Montclair's Outpost in the Burbs in February of 2001. The supporting cast includes backing vocalist Lucy Kaplansky, who, along with Shindell and Dar Williams, formed the late-'90s folk supergroup Cry, Cry, Cry. Although Shindell mostly stays in a calm, literate vein, there's a driving rock beat to "Arrowhead"; some sneering rage in his spurned- lover anthem, "Are You Happy Now?"; and a touch of the surreal in "Transit," a nightmarish account of an epic traffic jam "somewhere near Paterson." Supplementing his own material are two covers that spotlight his wistful side: Bruce Springsteen's "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" and Little Feat's "Willin'." It's hard for both the artist and the soundcrew to do a proper soundcheck when people are in the room, plus the artist's probably feel like they have to be a little nicer then they'd like to be :) Richard didn't look too happy afterwards....but all was fixed and the sound wasn't that bad for the actual show. Jeffrey Foucault opened...WOW WOW WOW!!!!! Oh my god he was so incredibly good. He did like three lines during his soundcheck and I already I was going to like him. He completely blew me out of the water and as soon as his set was done, I turned to the person I was with and said "we NEED to book him for our concert series"....that guy is going to go far really quickly. His setlist was Dove on the Waterline Walking at Dusk Streetlight halos Miles from the Lightening HIghway on the moon ?? a Tom House song?? California I'm Alright Then Richard...who was looking very relaxed and South American-like in his dress. A casual pair of jeans with boots, a button down tropical type shirt and his sports jacket. Ok I suppose I don't mind the beard TOO much....i can deal with it :) We got a semi-typical setlist and stories.....he had decided to drive from Oklahoma City instead of flying...he had a plane ticket but he decided he wanted to stay on the ground so he rented a mustang which was a "spritely little devil" The he was all confused because he thought the Rams were from LA not St. Louis After Shade of Gray he said he was glad to be where people spoke "proper english" ...he hears "correct english" but not "proper english" and everyone has cambridge accents down in Argentina....he said when he got on the bus after flying into JFK and heard Howard Stern and it "just brought tears to my eyes, it was so beautiful" :) And then the frail-hell rhyming and how because he's from Long Island he just can't say it "hail" He asked for requests and then told us it was pointless because he was just waiting for us to say what he was planning on singing so it made him look good :) After Summer Wind he said "that's not my wife's favorite song, she likes it a lot, but it's not her favorite" The Setlist Courier Sparrows Point Shades of Gray Love, Before You Go Beyond the Iron Gate Mary Magdalene Summer Wind, Cotton Dress I Am Arrowhead Reunion Hill Are You Happy Now Fishing Sonora's Death Row Transit America E: ??? Hey, i thought this was one of his "truck trilogy"? I'm sure I've heard it introduced that way. Trouble is I can't think what the 3rd would be! lisa ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Feb 2002 15:10:49 EST From: NHEMSRN@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Courier in Star-Ledger Willin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Feb 2002 15:10:12 -0500 From: Lisa Davis & family Subject: Re: [RS] Courier in Star-Ledger so in fact, did he announce it as one of the truck trilogy in Courier? I was the guy sitting with his wife just to your left. Proudly, we were the first ones there at about 6:54. I was surprised they let us watch the soundcheck. Richard kind of gave him a wry salute at the end when he said thanks to the sound guy. For anyone who wasn't there- it was a great concert. I was surprised at some of the song choices- both ones he did and didnt do. Songs I expected but didnt hear (Kenworth, Fleur-de-lis, You Stay Here, and Confession). Also the ones I didnt expect (Sparrow's Point, Shades of Gray, and Beyond the Iron gate). Overall it was great. Foucault was FANTASTIC! He is gonna be a star. He told very funny stories especially one about his car not having second gear which he ended abruptly but then used as a funny line in one of his songs.
