Richard Another web based store you can get virtually anything from that we like is http://www.fishrecords.co.uk Neil Pearson runs it and I can guarantee 100% customer service from Neil and like Jim I have no connection with Neil or his store other than through buying records. Here's a tale for you and it is true. I had the pleasure of meeting Neil and he put a disc on and after a couple of minutes another would go on then another then another with each one followed by the words oh have you heard this one... In the end I was going to buy around 18 albums but he stopped me half way through and told me to listen to them then buy the rest. Have you ever heard of a store owner refusing to take the money of a willing punter? Please check out his site and you will soon see what I mean. Take care, Alan Teather Who do you know who would like some extra income now the credit cards are biting? Have them email me for details. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org [mailto:owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org]On Behalf Of jim colbert Sent: 01 February 2002 18:27 To: shindell-list-digest@smoe.org Subject: [RS] new...or old...? Richard Spotted this on the new village records e-newsletter: VARIOUS FAST FOLK: A COMMUNITY OF SINGERS & SONGWRITERS To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of "Fast Folk Music" magazine comes this two disc set. This live set features thirty-our tracks from a wide variety of folk artists. Those paying tribute to the magazine include Steve Forbert, Lucy Kaplansky, Jack Hardy, Dave Van Ronk, Richard Shindell, Christine Lavin, John Gorka, Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega, Louise Taylor and a bunch I haven't heard of but am now curious to hear more from. If you like your folk music with the smell of coffee in the air then pull up chair and grab a cup. Smithsonian/Folkways $22.99 Ships February 26th (ooo, ooo, I hope there's a Frank Tedesco cut or Eddy Lawrence on it!) Anyone know what track rs is contributing, and if it's new, old, live, whassup? Also from the same newsletter, they mentioned Courier: RICHARD SHINDELL COURIER: LIVE More than any other type of music, except maybe Jazz, live is the best way to hear folk music. No phony trapping of the studio or a heavy handed producer to get in the way. This fifteen track disc is a great showcase for what Shindell does best. And that is entertain with his voice and well crafted songs. Backed by a small group he works through some of his best work and a cover of Lowell George's "Willin'" and Bruce Springsteen's early gem "4th Of July Asbury Park." Lucy Kaplansky is on board for harmony vocals. Sounds like it was quite a night. Signature Sounds $12.99 For anyone who doesn't have a good local source for a lot of the stuff we listen to and that is discussed here, you can do a lot worse than village. I have no affiliation, btw, other than having ordered stuff from them through the years. www.villagerecords.com. But I agree that the narrator in YSH is not Richard, but more of a universal character in a particular situation. I personally think the song would lose much of its punch without the last verse. It makes the return to that first (and comparatively mild) "I'll go look for wood" verse that much more powerful. But I know there have been songs I really wanted to sing, but that had a line here or there that I couldn't live with, and I've felt okay about changing them. Of course I'm usually playing to my livingroom walls, but I'm sure I'd do the same if I played in public alot. I have to mention one case of this, though, that I did find a bit offensive. The soundtrack to "Shrek" (okay, I have a two-year-old son) includes Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" (which, by the way, was gorgeously covered by the late, too-soon-gone Jeff Buckley) done by Tom Waits, and where the lyrics say "Maybe there's a god above, but all I've ever known from love was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you," they simply cut out the "Maybe there's a god above." The way they just lopped it off, it felt a little censorship-ish. Anyway, don't let me go down *that* road. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2002 16:45:01 -0500 From: Howie Subject: Re: [RS] a slice of american pie At 01:47 PM 2/1/2002, jpc wrote: > > (Oh dear heavens -- Roberta Flack's "Singing My Life" is stuck in my head.) > > > > > > > > Uh, that would be "Killing Me Softly." > > > >Written about Don McLean, no? I'm not sure I agree with "terrific" though. When I listen to RT do it, what stands out is (natch) the GUITAR which is utterly missing from this cover. Moreover all that sweetness of tone just is no match for Thompson's "foghorn" of a voice. But RS could probably match even that guitar, to judge by "shades of Grey"! lisa davis ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V4 #41 **********************************
