Cynthia gave me the Homespun tapes Ramblin' Jack guitar video for Christmas, speaking of the man. I've watched a few minutes of it so far... very informal, just kind of laid back, him and Arlo telling stories about the songs and then Jack plays the song with usually, arlo on backup. I think it's probably too guitar-oriented for a non-player to buy, but it's also conversational enough that I think they'd enjoy watching it once...if that makes sense. It's pretty user-friendly or accessible, too- which is another way of saying if you're a pretty good player you're not going to pick much up from it. It's good that some people have noticed the guy is still around, y'know- I can't really think of any other real links to the Guthrie-era "old school" folk music scene still around playing... probably Dave Van Ronk would be the closest thing I can think of, but that's mostly just because he preceded the dylan folk era. Am I overlooking someone? - -Jim ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2001 10:24:43 -0500 From: "Sally Green" Subject: [RS] Guardian of the word Hey all - so I got COURIER over the holidays and it is fantastic! It reminds me again how much I adore Richard's voice. On his studio recordings you get some of it, but live or on the live album you get so much more of that wonderful timbre, resonance, that glorious whatever-it-is that makes my heart tremble. I need to get myself to a live show soon to get some religion. Hey, did anyone notice that the order of the songs is reversed on the back of the CD? (Ha! Just kidding.) I was perusing the tour schedule and noticed that two of the Jersey dates are with Joan Baez. Perhaps this has been discussed before, but what will Ron G. do in that situation? Ron, will you go anyway, or will you travel to NY, PA, and places hither and yon? - --Sally sallyagreen@hotmail.com http://members.tripod.com/sagreen ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2001 10:26:50 -0500 From: "Sally Green" Subject: [RS] I did not ask him what the note said That reminds me, I forgot to say that the band is excellent. Love Richard with drums and a bass. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #486 ***********************************
