I love ten year night, but this has just not done much for me. I actually didn't buy a lot of brand new releases in '01 though so it's not like I had a huge stack of stinkeroos to choose from. I keep feeling like, maybe if I listen to it a little more... but it's still not doing much for me. Two of my favorites this year were both various artist discs, which is unusual for me: Poet, the Townes tribute, and Nod to Bob. I also have to put a nod in to the local band Stone Poets, who put out a pretty good disc a month or so ago. jpc just about to listen to a dave barry tape ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 10:10:59 EST From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: disappointments of the year 1. Gillian Welch "Time (The Revelator)": Sorry, Gillian, love ya, but please pick up the beats-per-minute. The Appalachian backwoods dustbowl funeral-march schtick is getting old. 2. Kate Rusby "Little Lights": Sorry, Kate, love ya, but the Ye Olde English Balladeer schtick is getting old. How about tackling a CD of covers of American folk songs? I think I'd like that muchly. 3. Shawn Colvin "Whole New You": Sorry, Shawn, love ya, but we waited four years for this? 4. Dar Williams "Out There Live": Sorry, Dar, love ya, but if I want to hear note-by-note renditions of songs from your studio albums, I'll play, y'know, your studio albums. All the songs, none of the screaming. And I won't even mention the CDs I didn't even BUY because I just can't stand to listen to John Gorka, Nanci Griffith or Mary Chapin Carpenter anymore. Oops, looks like I just mentioned 'em. ;-) RG ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 10:22:24 -0500 From: Charlie Hunter Subject: [RS] Contrivation Dear all, Sharon wrote (about the audience at the Emelin shows being asked to record applause at various levels): > it was pretty contrived to me... I certainly see Sharon's point; but _contrived_ isn't the word I'd use; I'd say it would be more _disillusioning_ to be coached to applaud 'tepidly', 'mildly' and 'enthusiastically' or whatever it was that ron asked, prior to the begging of the show. However -realistically- it makes more sense (and saves money in the long run) to get some 'clean' applause (especially the beginnings and ends - without sustained notes from instruments, for example), and have them in one's arsenal in order to use if needs be, rather than trying to grab stuff after the fact. As noted, virtually none of the 'canned' applause was used, except, of course, to bracket "Reunion Hill." Personally, I _loved_ that OUT THERE LIVE has that fervent audience sound. It's one of the things I have always found most distinctive and heartening about a Dar concert - that there can be the swooning, giddy applause at the start of the song, then close attention is paid, as opposed to the Ani-audience syndrome, which frightens me badly. Thanks, Amanda ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 16:42:32 -0000 From: "Dave McKay" Subject: [RS] Biggest Disappointments For me, the biggest disappointment of the year was Silver Bell from Patty Griffin. Of the CDs which actually *were* released in 2001, and not those refused an airing by faceless record companies, I would have to go for someone else who has had more than her share of trials by the musical establishment. I don't know what the real follow up to Jennifer Warnes' The Hunter would have sounded like, but I hope it would have been better than The Well.
