Not just them little round dots on the horizontal lines? he he he Seriously though, MOY was one of the first rs songs I admired, and was part of what led me to purchase sparrow's point when it was brand spankin' new. (I was familiar with the FF version.) I like the song myself, and have read a lot more into it thanks to the list. (BTW, actually reading the liner notes answered a much earlier question about the song- I queried about what the three blue lines were; but the colon in the lyrics tells me- Just three blue lines upon the page: you keep the vase/I'll keep the rose/and the memory of you.) I don't think it's the high point of Courier, but I personally wouldn't take it off. Interestingly, the one tune I really didn't care about, AYHN, (and my only complaint is I've heard it and played it too much; to this day it's the only richard I've ever heard on the radio around here) I found had new life breathed into it. I do hope Transit replaces AYHN as the sort of "theme song" for the Shindell Show, though. My initial gut reaction still holds true, for what it's worth: this is one helluva live album, and at the tops of my "no-skip" list. I joined after many thwarted attempts to engage friends, family, coworkers and minor aquaintances in conversations about Richard. There is, however, one local fellow who indulges me. Last night he claimed that Courier lacked the "everyman" quality of Richard's previous recordings. Everyman?! I can't imagine what kind of world this would be if every man were such a romantic. What do you folks make of this? Darry, our new lister, said: HI! I'm new to the list... (snippie snippie) There is, however, one local fellow who indulges me. Last night he claimed that Courier lacked the "everyman" quality of Richard's previous recordings. Everyman?! Welcome aboard, Darry! And hey, that's jumping in with both feet! I'm not quite sure what to make of that statement, other than to think of Jackson Browne (: I'm guessing he perhaps objects to the full band version of the songs, but that doesn't make sense because mostly everything here has been done in a studio setting with just as full instrumentation and arrangements. Has he heard all the previous discs, or is he basing that statement on one or two? What disc does he feel best embodies the everyman thing? I'm not trying to be difficult, just trying to understand, y'know? If you were in a time warp (ah, geez, get that damned rocky horror song out of my head now, please!) and had only ever heard his pre-sparrows point recordings I might understand it, but as it is, honestly, I just don't get that statement... is he looking for a more acoustic feel, starkness, rough edges, mandolins, what? I think I would just try to get him to expound on what he means by this before we, he he, expound on why he's wrong. I'd also like to know how he views SNP and Cry Cry Cry. To paraphrase Steve Earle, Courier is absolutely one of the best live albums I have ever owned, and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my Pumas and say so... everyone I have played it for, and trust me, I am not surrounded by folk-fans, has commented favorably on it. Even Scott my head-banging thrash rock playing designer protegi who is listening to Danzig as we speak. Jim Colbert who can't think of anything to say he's near today, least of all the end of his Christmas shopping. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2001 14:44:10 -0500 From: "Darry Madden" Subject: Re: [RS] waiting here for everyman... Thanks for the reply Jim...and jumping in with both feet was the idea! I agree, not a very well thought out question. I might have been employing the "baffle 'em with bullshit" technique.
