Thought #1: There is a difference between "nasal" and "whiny". I put richard in the first category, michael stipe in the second. just my opinion. Thought #2: Jorma Kaukonen has a nasal voice, but i still love it. Jerry Garcia had a god-only-knows what kind of voice, but i love it. Tom Waits and Greg Brown can sound like 6,000 mile-old DW-40, and i wouldn't change that oil for anything. - - eric ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 18:32:29 EST From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: COURIER critique Charlie sez: >> RS wasn't happy with _any_ of the live performances of "Reunion Hill" and chose to redo it at Ben Wisch's studio. ... I would disagree with it sounding different, myself. I think that's only due to the fact that you _know_ it was recorded seperately. << Ironically, I *didn't* read the liner notes until after I'd heard "Reunion Hill" and was a little confused by its "atmospheric out-of-placeness." Now, granted, having been at both the Outpost and the Emelin, I immediately knew that the take was not from either of those shows. But it was only then that I looked at the liner notes and confirmed that the cut was indeed a studio version. In any case, there *does* seem to be a distinct lack of "room tone" on the track. Which is why, in retrospect, my original wish for the song to be the last cut on the CD makes even more sense. In fact, I've re-sequenced and burned (for My Own Personal Use, of course) a version of the disc with "Wisteria" replacing "Memory of You," "Sonora" going in where "Reunion Hill" is, and with "Reunion Hill" replacing "Sandy" as the last song on the disc. Works better for me. RG ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 17:40:39 -0600 From: Bill Eley Subject: Re: [RS] How Many Orders? And after several years of travelling overseas to witness him, >next March he and Chris Smither are playing about an hour from where I live! >Yippee!! The last time Peter was in the UK, he was supporting Chris, except Chris had to go home early, as he sadly had a death in the family. I can't remember what year that was. Maybe Paul Rosen can remember (are you on the list Paul? I know Buffy is) - Paul and I saw Peter playing in a little pub in Cambridge. Since he was by himself and had nothing to do the next day, Peter kindly agreed to meet up with us for a meal in a local Thai restaurant - boy does he like his food hot....with extra chili sauce! Paul may also remember that one of the things I said to Peter was how much I loved his version of the Waterboys' "Whole of the Moon", recorded live in the subway, on his CD RAPTURE. After listening to me telling him how highly-charged that recording sounded to me, he replied that he was toying with the idea of recording a whole album in the Subway. So, he's been considering this for a long time. He also told us a really funny story about Richard....but if I told you...I'd have to kill you ;) Graham. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 22:24:48 EST From: Pfleary@aol.com Subject: [RS] Courier has arrived on the West Coast! Derek asked: > any Californians/west coasters see their copy yet? Yes, mine came today! I just ordered it Thursday. Kudos and thanks to Signature Sounds for getting it out here so quickly. It's playing now and all I can say is it is as least as good as people have been saying it is. In general, I find live albums disappointing, but this one approaches (perhaps achieves, I need a few more listens) perfection. Well done, it definitely takes a place in my top five for 2001. Also, not quite as exciting as Fran's new car, but I also got notification form my ISP that my DSL service has been provisioned. I'll be doing my self-installation after dinner while listening to Courier. What a great day! Eric asked: >and for the listers (outside of the nyc wfuv listening area, which probably gets more richard air time than anywhere else in the country): which of richard's songs do you hear on local radio? here in VT it seems that Confession gets the most airplay. Eric, here in northern California we hear quite a bit of Richard on public and some commercial radio stations. I've noticed that I hear Fishing and Arrowhead fairly often, but just heard a live version of AYHN (not from Courier) yesterday morning. I drove home from work the other night and hit that song just about 2 a.m., and it was a perfect fit. Deserted road, clear sky, ah, it was a beautiful thing! Maybe it is a song we night owls particularly love. And I love the juxtaposition of a song about a deserted road with one about a road that distinctly is *not.* It's magic, I tell you. Deb Awaiting the arrival of The Courier; the race is on: I ordered Courier the same day as the long-desired Nields live album. Here's hoping they arrive the same day -- like yesterday! ===== You can take the rock band away from the girl and think you've tamed her.
