I've been up all night, and there's been a noticeable (and piteous) lack of activity on the Richard-list these past 6 hours, so . . . I have a question. Which song of Richard's surprises you most? It could be surprising for any reason--it seems like a radical departure from the rest of his catalogue, or you can't imagine Richard writing it, or there's just something totally arresting about the song itself, something that makes you stop in your tracks with a little gasp, or anything else. For me, I think I would have to answer "Howling at the Trouble," for the last definite reason listed above. I always stop and do a little mental gasp at any of the numerous lines of sexual innuendo. It's a really amazing song, and I'm always amazed by its shamelessness. So of all Richard's songs, I'd have to say this is the one that surprises me most. OK. Your turn. :-) Ich muss Deutsch lernen, weil ich ein Prufung heute um zehn uhr haben. Ach, Mensch! haha Peace, Vanessa ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2001 07:43:25 EST From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [RS] Winterland Wondering Anybody going to chime in on the Winterland compilation CD? I'm hoping there are better production values for "Love, Before You Go" on Richard's next studio CD, if he decides to include it. Other than that, I'm a bit disappointed by and large with this record. It has some truly bright spots, but some low points as well. I dunno, maybe it's me and my lack or preparedness for the holidays, but I just can't seem to wrap myself around this record at all, save for a cut or two. >Sigh!< Of course I understand it being produced for a great cause and I'm happy to contribute, as I often do. Love to know what the rest of you think... I thought it was quite nice! (cynthia poo-pooed and drank some kind of swill that tasted like vinegar to me and was three times the price. I guess they done hands ya out some culture along with your black clothes when you work in Manhattan!) (Now what I need to know is, if I pour arbor mist into a bota and hide it under an army jacket and sneak it into a concert, will it taste even better, like boone's farm did in the late seventies... he he he. Ah, the fun times of sneaking wine into the war memorial in johnstown to hear someone like nazareth and starz play power chords.) It goes with me to work, and comes home to the cd changer. Our son and I dance to the Grinch tune. Our daughter quips she'll be able to play the Gigue like Matt Haimovitz any day now since she's taking private lesson ; ). I love the Dave & Tracy tune, ditto for Richard's. The only cut I'm not crazy about is Maria Sangiolo's "The Cherry Tree Carol," and not because I dislike her voice or the arrangement or anything; I just find it to be a strange carol (unlike *our* Carol, who is not strange at all). Maybe it will grow on you. Nancy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Dec 2001 09:00:41 -0500 From: "Gene Frey" Subject: [RS] Where does the apostrophe go? Hey you guys, So long as we have turned into the on-line version of Wine Spectator (under $3 division), allow me to chime in with the beverage of my late-'70s, semi-suburban, drinking-age-of-18 choice - Yago Sangria. (There's supposed to be an apostrophe, and maybe a 't' somewhere in Sangria, but I have no idea where). We'd buy the gallon jug and drink it like kool-aid. Us city kids thought Boone's Farm was for country boys like Jim. Jim, too true about smuggling it in under your jacket. I remember carrying a 'skin' of Yago in to see Bruce Springsteen at Madison Square Garden in 1978. Thunderbird, Pat? Too hard-core for me. Jim also teased: >>I guess they done hands ya out some culture along with your black clothes >>when you work in Manhattan!) << Yup. They also teach you to look down your nose while extending your pinky, never spilling a drop. Ah, geez, the memories of youth. Jim, The great thing about Florida, is that after we finish counting all our ballots, we can go to any convenience store and buy beer & wine. Just don't try to do it on Sunday morning before 1 PM!! We MUST have some sorta of arbitrary blue law... Last night I forgot the dear husband's beer at the grocery store so I stopped into a Quickie Mart on a quite notorious strip of highway and was AMAZED at the variety of cheap wine and malt liquor they offered. I didn't even know MD 20-20 came in that many flavors. But like you, my day in the midnight sun is over. I quit drinking for 2 years (during pregnancy and breastfeeding) and never got back up to my professional status. Now it's one beer and I fall asleep. My college cronies would never believe that...... Ah, youth -- it's wasted on the young. ;-) ......Carol ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2001 11:50:43 EST From: Loracevoll@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: MD > From: Rongrittz@aol.com > A little joke: >............snip............. And the president of Guinness > says "I'll have a Coke, please." Everyone looks at him strangely, and he > says "Well, if my esteemed colleagues aren't having beer, I'M certainly not > having beer." > RG, I have a great story for THAT. One day my daughter and I were swimming at my alma mater's pool (University of South Florida -- I'm sure everyone here has heard of it....Go Bulls!!) anyway, the husband decides to meet us over there but naturally stops off at the campus pub on his way. They discretely gave him a pint of Guinness in a waxed paper Coke cup. He set it down on the picnic table and our 6 year old just assumed it was Coke. Before we could stop her, she took a big swig. It was possibly the best spit take I've ever witnessed. Then she spend about half an hour sounding like a cat trying to get rid of a hairball. Wouldn't it be great if that worked like grandpa taking you out behind the shed to make you sick on cigars so you never smoked?? Chances are, I won't be that lucky....... ............Carol The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. ~~ Eleanor Roosevelt ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #434 ***********************************
