You know, this post made me think that an RS box set would be a really great idea. With SP, BD, RH, C3, SNP, a rereleased Spring EP, C, and TSS. Available at the low, low price of like $85, or something like that. Give the gift of Richard this holiday season. Or maybe everyone who would buy it or want it already has all the music. So, I am turning 21 Monday. In other words, I am going to be a real-live person with lots of rights and stuff. Like the right to go to over-21 venues. I am very much looking forward to this. No longer do I have to salivate over concerts I can't get into, or figure out whether it would be better to lie at the door or just give up entirely. Yes, and amid all of this most-deserved tribute to such a fine man, I hope folks remember his good humor. Wasn't he the one who "haggled" with Lorne Michaels about getting his cut of the money Lorne offered if the Beatles would reunite and play on Saturday Night Live? I also especially admired the way he brought spirituality and religion into mainstream music...not just the easy, feel-good stuff, but songs that were deep and meaningful. Actually, while I may not be driven to incontinence, I could manage a spit-take worthy of many of our finer stand-up comedians. Keep your umbrellas at home, folks, as each passing day makes it seem more likely that Richard will cover Eminem's 'The Real Slim Shady' before he performs 'The Weather' live. I am (o.k., that "I am" was really not meant to be a pun, I swear it) listening to the two-minute song segments. Chills, folks. I'm feeling chills. Oh, man. I feel a little light-headed. Arrowhead with all of the changes. The third brigade. The verses rearranged the new way. Yes, still definitely feeling giddy. Damn, it sounds good. Wow, Richard was in great voice at these shows! And WOW, this is the "Fishing" that completely overwhelms me in Richard's recent live shows. What I love about the CD (at least from what I can tell in the samples) is that you can get the genius of Richard's earliest work combined with the raw power of Richard's singing these days, the way he just devours an entire room. I WANT MY CDs!!!!! I want them now, now, now! The slow Reunion Hill. I think I am going to dissolve into pure awe. This is great. Now I can have the big, soaring production I love on the studio album, and also the version I know from his latest live shows. Wow. This album is like a State of the Union address for the nation of Shindell-admirers. Just listening through headphones connected to my little laptop playing RealPlayer files, I can almost feel the rush of actually being at a live show and seeing Richard play. It's amazing how well that energy of the live performance translated into stunning recordings! And it's so great that Willin' is on there. It's fun and happy, and to my mind, definitely a part of the Shindell pseudo-catalogue--that is, the list of hardy perennial covers. And a good thing, too! :-) Oh, this is shaping up to be a very good day. A very good day, indeed. So, where are you people? Wake up! You can sell the man your labor, and send the money to Signature Sounds! Peace, V, who can not wait to hear the CD for real, and really, really can't wait to hear "The Sonora Sessions." ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #429 ***********************************
