I'm no longer a Thompson "completist," as I finally realized that was turning into a very expensive hobby- I was buying a lot of stuff, particularly live bootlegs, that I rarely listened to... but he remains one of my favorites. One of the bootlegs I had was a disc of rafferty's folly- the original shooot out the lights songs that were scrapped. My impression was the original recording really didn't deserve to be released- just seemed flat or uninspired or something. Definately a far step from the gem SOTL was when it came out for real! What was the quote somewhere at the time, "for domestic drama this beats anything since blood on the tracks..." (A line I've seen swiped several times since!) And NO FAIR putting the courier down yet, Kerry!!!! Not when we have to wait until.. hey, TOMORROW! Woo hoo! It feels like Christmas Eve. I ain't been this excited about a new record release date since Johnny Cash at San Quentin. jpc in sc pa ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2001 05:53:31 -0800 From: Bill Wynn Subject: Re: [RS] RIP Quiet One One of the most subtly innovative guitarists ever, George's influence as a musician continues to be felt everywhere. Through his music, his graceful personality, and his indomitable sense of humor, George has left the world a better place. Although his passing is truly sad, George remains with us in spirit and legacy. Often overlooked amidst the enormity of the Beatles' catalogue, "The Inner Light" has one of George's most beautiful melodies as well as a simple but undeniable wisdom. THE INNER LIGHT By George Harrison - (C) 1968 Northern Songs Ltd. WITHOUT GOING OUT OF MY DOOR, I CAN KNOW ALL THINGS ON EARTH. WITHOUT LOOKING OUT OF MY WINDOW, I CAN KNOW THE WAYS OF HEAVEN. I saw the film again while in Vancouver this summer, a few days after the severity of Harrison's illness was becoming clear, (George having issued a characteristically wry statement downplaying his condition). "Everest" concludes with a new recording of George singing "Here Comes the Sun," and as I stepped out of the theatre with the film's powerful images, the beauty of the song, and George's joking about his own mortality intertwining in my thoughts, I was greeted by the sunlight breaking through the clouds above the surrounding mountains. I had to smile, grateful to George and the humor of life for a small moment of awareness. - -BW ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2001 10:21:53 -0800 From: jim colbert Subject: [RS] ants in my pants Okay, is it just me, or has anyone else been sneaking a peek every now and then to signature's web site to see if maybe, just maybe the info on ordering the courier was up yet, even though it isn't the first yet?! OK, once or twice. Per hour. I mean, nobody's going to load up this page on a Saturday, are they? They'd likely do it on Friday before they go home. Hey, you Signature guys, take the rest of the day off. Really, no problem. Enjoy the weekend. Come in Monday rested, relaxed, and ready to ship. Nicely done :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2001 12:01:46 EST From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [RS] More on I Am Not surprisingly, Richard's take on the Sept.11th tragedy is unlike all the other songs/poems I've heard and read. I think "I Am" is terrific and does indeed have a "Whitmanesque" quality about it. I also just saw a great movie directed by the artist Julien Schnabel about the life of a gay Cuban poet/writer who died of AIDS a few years ago. One of the poems the movie shows in the final screen begins each sentence with "I Am" as in "I am the child with the dirty face..." I couldn't help notice the similarity. Richard's ode to the WTC attacks is profound, subtle yet powerful. I like the idea of not being hit over th head with images that already burn to brightly in my mind's eye. And Richard sings "I Am" with that signature urgency we've all come to love and admire so much. In many ways, it's what sets him apart. For my generation (I'm 47) it seems as if we measure our lives somehow by the Beatles. When they first hit Ed Sullivan, I was a kid taking guitar lessons. George played lead, so he quickly became my favorite. He had a humility about him that was appealing, which later showed itself as a spiritual yearning. He was an under-rated guitarist. (Just try copying his riffs.) And he didn't write prolifically, but he wrote beautifully. (Something, Here Comes the Sun, While my Guitar Gently Weeps.) Ah George, say it ain't so. - -lee > >Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2001 04:00:33 -0500 >From: "John Melillo" >Subject: [RS] RIP Quiet One > >All things must pass >All things must pass away >All things must pass >None of life's strings can last >So, I must be on my way >And face another day > >G.H. >1943-2001 > >------------------------------ > >End of shindell-list-digest V3 #427 >*********************************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2001 14:02:01 -0800 From: jim colbert Subject: [RS] box sets > Could it be that I am the one who doesn't > have 10 Desert Island Disks, but 10 Desert Island Box Sets?
