I adore the tune (although I do prefer it live with lucy harmony) but it feels a bit disjointed or misplaced to me, being sandwiched between sparrows point and fleur de lis. Now you could argue that the change in tempo and feel would be good, and I don't know where else I would have put it... my first thought is at the end, but lawdie lawdie I wouldn't give up by now as the closing track... jim somewhere near seven stars ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 13:46:35 -0800 From: Lee Wessman Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V3 #422 What? Ron, you make life rough: DAR WILLIAMS: The Honesty Room (The Razor and Tie release) although as an audiophile, i prefer the sonics of the Waterbug release (better mixes for Alleluia and Traveling Again) , i don't think i could do without Arrival on the track list of my ONE CD. Why this album? It reminds me of where i've been (when i was a girl...my friends give me purple flowers and orange tea), where i am (i live with the fear that my spirit will be broken...aren't we aging well?), and where i am going (you knew this world can't be saved, only discovered...the building is done, but the work's never done). While Dar has produced some fine albums since 1993 and matured both in voice, as a person, and in her musical skills, THR has the bare bones honesty (no pun intended), innocence, and discovering that make me open my soul for both reflection, healing, and growth each time i sit down and listen to it start to finish. no, it's not perfect (but what is), but it's my keeper if had to choose just one (both a musical treat and a philosohy textbook). thanks for continuing this great thread. i haven't kept up earnestly with the digests lately, but this waked me out of my lurking/skimming coma. Til Gene stopped me in my tracks with his "no cd mixes" rule. So, guess I'll go back to furrow my brow and think on this one. Don't wanna be-- The Weakest Link a/k/a Laura P.S. 22 albums I agree is not "travelling light" to our little desert island. However, 22 CD's are pretty light and compact, no? Guess the cd boom box with 50 extra C batteries is another story...I also have 2 more: Joan Armatrading Love & Affection (I think) and how could I forget Joni Mitchell "Court and Spark"!!!? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 12:51:56 -0800 (PST) From: Derek Fong Subject: [RS] One album...just one album? sigh... I love about half of "Harbinger"--the second half of the cd tends to meander a bit for me. But "Bethlehem" ran around in my head repeatedly for a year. It's just a perfect song. And "This Fire" is a terrific cd too. But her last cd. What a waste of money! I was so incredibly disappointed. Well, maybe it was a delayed sophomore jinx. She has rather disappeared hasn't she? And at least SHE never released a book of crap poetry like that other singer/"songwriter" I could name. :) Tom ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 18:04:42 -0500 From: Vanessa Christina Wills Subject: [RS] I am a brilliant JEWEL... Yes--her last album seemed like a big step down. I didn't even bother to buy it, having heard more than enough of that "I Believe in Love" song, or whatever it was, on XPN. But yes, Paula Cole had quite a wonderful creative period before that little misstep. "Bethlehem." Yes, theme song of high school life. Amazing stuff. "Watch the Woman's Hands" is another perfect one, imho. - --V Tom926@aol.com wrote: >Since I have already learned to duck rotten veggies for defending the >brilliance of Joan Baez, I will stand up with you Vanessa, on the merits of >those two Paula Cole albums.
