I can't think, off the top of my head, of a single Leonard Cohen song > whose lyrics fail to stand on their own. That iswhat I said, if you re-read my post. Leonard Cohen is an exception to my general opinion that lyrics alone are often not that intriquing or moving until you have heard the song performed; many Cohen lyrics I'm familiar with- and I don't claim to be an authority, I think I have maybe five of his albums- have interested me before I have heard the song performed. Back in the early 80's, when I was both younger and a lot smarter than I am now, back when I read Blake and O'Neill daily and knew everything about literature and poetry, (yes, you're supposed to get a chuckle out of that!) I recall buying one and reading, nay, studying the whole lyric sheet before I put them it the turntable. (Sometimes, I must confess, the lyrics interested me more than the peformed version of the song, in a few cases.) (On a related note, I always enjoyed the Jennifer Warnes collection of Cohen tunes, famous blue raincoat. It carved no new ground, but was a very nice, listenable piece. And even had SRV on guitar on first we take manhattan, if I remember correctly.) Anyway, I was making the point that I might not have been as moved by either new rs song had I not heard them performed, and only had the lyrics. I saw beth amsel and michael smith play here saturday night, btw. Nice show; but not one I would have travelled too far for. It was very funny to observe the very reserved, polite State College folk audience after becoming more used to the new jersey school of "audience participation." jpc ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2001 08:43:42 EST From: Tom926@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: Leonard Cohen I can think of one that is anthologized--I think it started out as a poem: Suzanne. It is the Norton Introduction to Literature (and Sandy Denny via Fairport Convention, does a killer cover of it; Iain Matthews and she do it as a duet). "Bird on a Wire" is another good one. "The Song of Bernadette" is a bit sentimental but a lovely lyric--written with Jennifer Warnes. "Famous Blue Raincoat," the title track off JW's cover album of Cohen tunes (absolutely a must-own album) is another song whose lyrics can stand alone. It's a bit early, but I am sure there are more. He really is a wonderful poet and lyricist. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Nov 2001 10:43:20 -0800 From: jim colbert Subject: [RS] beth amsel; no richard content Oh yeah... I forgot to really mention, I thought Beth Amsel's set Saturday was quite nice indeed. The venue has excellent acoustics and no amplification is allowed... nor is it needed. It was quite a nice setting for her guitar (taylor dreadnought) and voice. She's worth a listen when she's playing out your way. I picked up Kindling but haven't had a chance to give it a thorough listen yet; an initial background level spin here at work has me making the comparison to early-90's Carrie newcomer vocal and arrangement wise...which is no bad thing to me. jpc state college pa ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Nov 2001 11:45:34 -0500 From: Vanessa Wills Subject: Re: [RS] lenny C; mikey s and beth A oops! My understanding is that he will be fine but needless to say, he's had to cancel his performances for the next couple of weeks. One of those cancellations was his performance at the Folk Music Society of Huntington tonight. I know that some of you were considering coming, so I would alert you to the fact that Mark will not be appearing. Keep Mark in your prayers; he's a great guy and we wish him well for a speedy recovery. Fortunately, we've managed to replace Mark with one Deb Talan, from Cambridge way, who will perform in his stead. If you haven't heard Deb Talan as yet, I would urge you to do so immediately. This woman stands apart from most girls with guitars--her writing is intelligent and quirky (not unlike Dar) and her melodies are memorable and haunting. Her new CD, "Something Burning" is just tremendous, and there is not a single throwaway cut on the entire disc. Some of the songs are truly outstanding. Easily the best record I've heard this year. Deb Talan is a major new talent--you will be hearing about her. And soon, if you haven't already. If you can make it to the show, which starts at 8:30 PM (open mike at 7:30) , it will be the best $8 you've spent in a long time, trust me. Details: Deb Talan at the Folk Music Society of Huntington, Saturday, November 3, held at the Congregation Church in Centerport, Long Island, NY. For info: 631-425-2925.
