I am [jim colbert Subject: [RS] songs versus linear poetry... I am Well, it is a SONG, after all, not linear poetry. Not every song is going to touch every one us the same way; we don't all have the same favorite cuts... But geez Louise, anyone who was unmoved by richard's performance @ in Wayne, at least at the second show, well, seems pretty much unfeeling, in my book. Or possibly dead. And without meaning to sound arrogant, anyone here who can write and perform a song that does that to me again, heck, I'll gladly fork over $15-$18 and buy a cd from ya to hear it. I've heard it, and it's amazing. The title track is a killer, and other songs like "Undertow," "You're Not Coming Back" and the amazing amazing amazing "Surrender Dorothy" (in which she rhymes "dances" and "Kansas") are not to be missed. You've got RG's money-back guarantee on this one. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 09:54:50 -0800 From: jim colbert Subject: [RS] I am, one more time, then I'm done In rereading the lyrics and remembering hearing it live, I just have to offer again. I still think it's a powerful, moving song. I guess everyone was expecting, I dunno, say one man's story of how world or epic events have impacted on his life. Instead, richard offers us a simple sketch of the american people, of single images that unified, create a nation... "I am the silent phone..." I remember the frustration and pain and helplessness I felt sitting here, 4 hours away, waiting for a call to find out if my girlfriend in Manhattan was even still alive, and to me those five words alone can bring me to tears. (I am, admittedly, quite emotional!) It's kind of the space, the air here that I like. You fill in the blanks with what those images mean to you. It's kind of like a tapestry to me. Would I argue that it is Mr. Shindell's best work? No. Would I have shown much interest if I had read the song as lyrics without having heard it? Very likely not. But then, that is probably true of most songs. (Leonard Cohen is a notable exception.) It would also be interesting that in a different venue or setting, I may have not been as fond of the song. Of course we all have our own opinions, and that's fine and dandy. (It's not like mathematics where 2+2 = 4; for the most part there's no right or wrong when it comes to personal preferences in musical matters, much like painting, literature, etc. ) So maybe I'm just a hopelessly sappy cornball romantic or not as smart as you guys, but I still like the song for what it is. I don't expect to change anyone's opinion, just elaborating a bit on my own. Now just out of curiosity, how did you folks feel about the appartently discarded "hideous grin" or the new holiday love song? How did you feel these examples of recent richard writing fared? jim colbert listening to townes van zandt ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 16:14:19 EST From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: kristy the newbie Hey Listers, I assume that the newest kid on the RS block, Kristy the Lurker, will submit to the same stringent initiation rites and hazing rituals as I did when I was a Delta Sigma Gamma RS pledge. To jog your collective memories: 1. At least one difficult RS literacy quiz with very ambiguous and challenging questions; 2. At least one provocative and candid report of an RS album, ideally a tough one like SP; 3. At least one occasion, ideally more, where she is made to feel clueless, ashamed, and like a 4-year-old lost at the carnival. 4. At least 1 posting where she is told what 2x3 means. 5. Translation of one Rilke poem or essay from the original German, also transcribed into guitar chords for Ron's approval. I duly note that no one has gone on record (yet) to comment on Kristy's account of not only claiming Richard looks like Alec Baldwin's cousin but admittedly giggling like a schoolgirl throughout an intimate concert. Whereas I was severely taken to task for comparing Richard to Forrest Sawyer of Nightline and for admitting that I requested "Free Bird" as I held up a Turkish cigarette after one performance...Would it be presumptuous of me to think that perhaps I've softened the hardened hearts of you VSF's towards those of us who are newer to the RS bandwagon? So who wants to ask about the meaning of By Now? Mwahahaha... Grasshopper (making room for the new generation) P.S. So is anyone else having a hard time visualizing Vanessa on a chaise longue in Puerto Rico, drinking a pina colada while reading Heidegger? Or maybe she has a copy of "Valley of the Dolls" hidden behind that philosophy book... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 16:16:48 EST From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: Rilke rules In a message dated 10/29/2001 4:56:46 AM Eastern Standard Time, owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org writes: << "For one human being to love another that is perhaps the most difficult of all of our tasks the final and ultimate proof the task for which all others are but preparation." I was just saying that I haven't heard the new song but I have a feeling it will move me to tears just because it will bring up the feelings of that terrible day. I did get to hear the other two songs. I really liked the "Hideous Grin", not sure exactly what it means, it reminded me of ants invading your house! The other song, "Love, Before you go", it is suppose to be on a Christmas album right?? I think, maybe, he should have thrown in, I don't know, something like the snowy day or something to make me think of Christmas time. I guess I shouldn't be so picky! I will buy the "I Am" ep though, I am curious. Still here, Janet > Now just out of curiosity, how did you folks feel > about the appartently discarded "hideous grin" or > the new holiday love song?
