I hate to be that naysaying voice, but, er. I have to say "Nay." I mean, the song is nice. But from the lyrics, it looks to me like something any number of post-Sep. 11th folk-earnest singer-songwriters could have written. I mean, hell, I could have written it. I'm serious. There doesn't seem to be absolutely anything very Richard about it. There's nothing of his genius in the song. And after all the ravings over it, I'm a little, well...er, disappointed. I mean, really. This is not the kind of thing that will bear much repeat listening. About halfway thru the lyrics I was bored. That _never_ happens with me and Richard Shindell songs. Heck, I could probably listen to "She's in Spain" a thousand-billion times, and that's certainly not even one of his best. Sorry, guys. I say Nay. I hope this won't be Richard's only attempt at a song about September 11th. He can do much, much better. And always has in the past. I had exactly the opposite response. It is often difficult to get the feel for a song when all you have is its lyrics to judge by. However, while indeed Richard's lyrics generally take front-and-center in his songs, his vocals and guitar-playing are not to be under-rated in his conveyance of emotion and power. Sometimes simple is best. I would guess that most of the post-September 11 folk-earnest singer-songwriters had TOO MUCH to say! And I'm sure Richard's delivery is powerful. Even without the music I could not get the rhythm of it out of my head last night. I found myself, after the disaster, wanting to pray but not knowing what to pray for, or how. Or do something but not knowing what, or how. Then I realized that praying doesn't ever make me feel much better anyway. But living does. So thanks to Richard the song I've been trying to write finally drummed its way out last night. It's my prayer for me, for you guys, for the world. Thanks Richard. (I haven't heard Richard's song so this one sort of goes with the tune of David Massengil's "Nothing" (Which has also been running through my head lately) I Will Not Ask I will not ask for life I will not ask for breath I will not ask for beauty I will not ask for death But I will tell a story I will hum a tune I will paint a masterpiece And forget that it is one I will not ask for wealth I will not ask for pain I will not ask for health I will not ask for rain But I will build a house I'll look into their eyes I will eat my bread And watch the river rise I will not ask for love I will not ask for truth I will not ask for time I will not ask for proof But I will live with you Thought and word and skin Beneath the sun and moon Water earth fire wind I will not ask to know I will not ask to keep I will not ask for laughter I will not ask to weep But I will listen well And I will watch you grow I will drink the wine And want you when you go I will not ask for country I will not ask to roam I will not ask for shelter I will not ask for home But I'll wallk with the stranger And sleep under his roof And sing his child a lullaby And tidy up the room I will not ask for god I will not ask for grace I will not ask for mercy I will not ask for peace But I will plant a tree And water it with care And I will look at it And know that it is there - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vanessa Wills" To: Sent: Saturday, October 27, 2001 9:37 AM Subject: [RS] errrr > er. > I hate to be that naysaying voice, but, er. They don't have it. I've heard it before but would like my own copy. Went to borders and they say it's not available. In fact there doesn't seem to be much recent info on the web for him at all. Vanessa, we live in Kendall Park, which is 8 miles up the road from Princeton. I wish we knew you wanted/needed a ride to Wayne - we would have accomodated you gladly. I'll suspend judgement until I can hear it live. I trust you guys! Joe--I actually was too poor and wayyyyy too overworked to go, but it's good to know I've got a pal nearby! :-) It would have been a bad scene, tho--I slept eight hours total that week. All of my philosophy major friends and I were pretty much dazed and crying by Thursday, and I recall having a conversation with one of my friends in lecture about how long it had been since either of us had eaten or slept. Several days, for both of us. So I was in no shape! Sad, I know. At least I'm going to spend this week in Puerto Rico!!! yay Fall Break. And I'm packing lots of Aristotle, G.E. Moore, Bertrand Russell, Wittgenstein, Heidegger and Iris Murdoch to keep me company. Yay.
