Then Dar went on to say how Richard wanted to be the "cool chaplain" and sorta succeeded for 3 months when he went to work as a hospital chaplain and they gave him all the people who had checked "none" or "other"...Richard replied with "that shows you what they thought of my pastoral skills." Then a discussion of how all the "cool chaplains" all became raging atheists. You had to be there...or hear it on the bootleg ...it's really really cute and really funny...the audience was dying of laughter. - ----- Original Message ----- From: Norman A. Just wanted to share, I go hear a local singer/songwriter, Kris Kehr, any chance I get. He has both a full band, the Stone Poets, and an acoustic trio, which is what I usually go hear. (He also does the occassional true solo show, which is always pretty good.) Actually, let me fix that statement. He doesn't deserve the adjective "local"- he's really quite good, and adding that word local seems to lower your expectations or something. Anyway, he's from the Allentown PA area originally, and used to host the open mic nights at, and run sound at Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem around the time Gorka was still living there too. He was sharing a few of his Richard recollections last night; he said he remembered Richard most as being soft-spoken, both humble and funny, somewhat fastidious with his sound mix but very gracious and thankful when it was where he wanted it. Kris said he remembered him looking through the stack of tapes there for something to listen to and chose Shawn Colvin's old demo tape from, I guess the early 80's, before she even had her first self-done thing out; I guess this was literally a home made demo tape with a typewritten cover. Kris said he remembered him playing a few songs on whatever the hell that thing that's sort of like the bouzouki is... he also shared that his favorite disc is SNP, but his favorite song is likely May. So like I said, no great truths revealed here, just sharing someone's thoughts and recollections of rs. jpc very tired today, cause his plans to not stay out too late derailed when he started talking to someone very enthusiastic and knowledgable about music! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2001 09:39:40 -0400 From: "Shelley DePaul" Subject: Re: [RS] Philosophy is the talk on a cereal box (Edie Brickell) >Richard was also a philosophy/ religion major. Really! I had heard seminary student so I assumed religion - didn't know about the philosophy. > : "Religion is the smile on a dog..." Actually I found that quotation quite profound. And compatible as hell with Wittgenstein. Perhaps "the limits of our knowlege ARE the limits of our language ."(Wittgenstein) We need to learn dog talk! O. k. off to work. Beautiful song... I'm hoping it retains the simplistic beauty of the version he played live. Just when I was starting to gain a modicum of confidence, at times even schoolgirl giddiness, about my growing RS-IQ (thanks be to this List and its posse of sensei(s)), I'm down to zero again. What is 3x2? I'm happy to hear that Kristin found one, but it's a RS album, not a piece of lumber, right? And while I'm beginning again, I may as well ask for those of you through whom I am living vicariously (okay, all of you!) to tell me what this new song "I Am" is all about and possibly post the lyrics if it's not too much trouble. On an unrelated but chatty note, has anyone heard Robert Earl Keen's "Not a Drop of Rain"? I rather love it. Yeah it's gotta be that, he was only on one Ron Sexsmith album and it's not the one with Speaking with the Angel, he's been on Richard's albums but didn't do Mary Magdelene. So By Way of Sorrow is my final answer :) Almost sad the useless knowledge that is rolling around in my brain....can't do calculus to save my life but I can work out who played on which album in a matter of 3 minutes.
