Ordered this a.m. I'm impressed by many things: 1. that your son would give you Rilke books as a gift (he must be older than my daughters, 4 and 1); 2. that you'd be bold enough to give this book or any gift to Richard Shindell; 3. that you broke what I can only speculate is Richard's guitar (I'm as unfamiliar with musician syntax like Martin, Fox, etc. as I am with Rilke's German) and lived to laugh about it. You sound like a good sport. I did hear how Rilke died, but figured it was apocryphal. In my youth (which I think was wasted on me, now that I think about it, I travelled to Ronda, Spain, where I Rilke lived and (I think) is buried. A magical, mystical place, not far from Grenada. I love Rilke's "learn to love the questions themselves" and other advice from his Letters to a Young Poet and also On Love and Other Difficulties. "Richard, give me the damn guitar and let me show you how you play the damn song." Actually, there was a time a few years ago at the Outpost, where I requested "Sonora's Death Row" and RS got stuck on the lyrics, looked over to me and said "Hey, YOU requested it, what's the next verse?" Especially of the new song? I have no idea when we will see Richard on the West Coast again and I would really love to hear this "special set." I have stuff to trade. Not that anyone is taping these shows of course ;-)! Philosophy/religion major. Actually he is transferring to Moravian next year, which is also Richard's alma mater. Yep. He's got great taste. Love him. >2. that you'd be bold enough to give this book or any gift to Richard Shindell He was admiring the books which were scattered on the couch downstairs. Thought he would like that one in particular. My dad was a jazz bassist so I grew up around musicians. I was practically raised (from teenhood on anyway)at the Deerhead, which is a jazz club in the Poconos, on the music of Johnny Coats who was then, and still is one of my own, very dear, musical influences. But between that and helping out at Godfreys over the years I been really fortunate to have met a lot of great performers, most of whom are just really nice (amazingly talented) people. Richard, which is obvious from the postings on this list, isn't one to distance himself from people, which is one of the reasons he's so well loved. Hope you get to see him soon. (I forget where you said you were from.) >3. that you broke ...and lived to laugh about it. By Now I think we've come to the conclusion during our recent discussions on this list that outright murder probably isn't Richard's style. Most likely, By Now, he's waiting to catch me walking down some dark deserted road late at night and...................... Stop me! Enough. Glad you found the book.
