The Rilke quote is beautiful. Thanks. I thought I owned every Rilke book 
written, but maybe not the one with this short story in it...I'm more 
familiar with his poems and his Letters to A Young Poet, one of my dog-eared 
favorites.* Thanks much for digging this one up for me! I'm going to try to 
find it.

P.S. For those smarty-pants listers who will undoubtedly ask me in future 
postings: "But Laura, Do you read these in the original German?"  The answer 
is: nein.  English is my first and sadly my only fluent language, unless you 
count Pig Latin,ubbi dubbi, and fractured French!

Not necessarily.  But if you are smoking either Djarums (Turkish clove 
cigarettes) or Gitanes san filtres, you should probably stop.  I did, when I 
had kids. To compensate, though, you might want to trade in your beret for a 
fez, and replace the turtleneck (so "90's!) for a Black Dog Bakery or New 
Orleans Jazz Fest T-shirt.  Is your pretentious poetry haiku or sonnets?  As 
for listening to Richard Shindell, at the cafe, or anywhere, I can't find 
fault here.  But...shouldn't you be listening to something more Beat?

Hehe. Looks like we've got a trend going, here. Maybe Laura, Katrin and I can
start a German-language Richard-list. I, of course, will only be able to
contribute posts about ordering in restaurants, small talk about the weather,
what I did on the weekend, the clothes I am wearing, the names of geographical
things, and going to parties. :-)

Zeit viele jahre habe ich nicht deutch gesprachen (???) aber noch heute
kenne ich ein sehr wenig noch sprechen!  Gulp!  Sonders wurde ich viehl
besser franzosig sprechen -- funny how I can remember some words but not
the GRAMMAR! (sp)  - I did manage to say about a sentence to a distant
heir, via email, once upon a time.  And long long ago I actually managed
to read All Quiet on teh Western Front in german.  As for Rilke, my dad
had this great book with the English and german on facing pages!

Me too. I remember many of the german words I learned in college -- and I
understand Lisa's German sentences-- but I'm lost about the grammar now.
But I only took two years.

I had to read _All Quiet on the Western Front_ (in English) for high school.
