:-) Anyways... "Mercy Seat" is on the album "Tender Prey." And, it's great. :-) Has sooo much more going on than the Johnny version, elements whose loss you really feel in a stripped-down version. And plus, I like Nick's voice so much better! Much rawer. Johnny's version basically sounds like a walk-through in comparison. Katrin Uhl wrote: > better than Johnny's version? I remember reading a quote once about either Duke Ellington or Wynton Marsalis (sorry, as many of you know By Now, I do have memory lapse issues), to the effect that their genius lay in what they left out of their music, rather than what was kept in. Come to think of it, I think it was about Miles Davis. ANYWAY, isn't it cool that one ostensibly simple song like By Now can reveal so many different meanings to listeners? Does anyone think there's a connection between the listener and what he/she "hears" in a song? (reads in a poem, sees in a painting, etc.)...just wondering. Today's topic: Is it possible that Richard Shindell's evil twin (Mandy Patinkin) may have written By Now and other songs of evil, and that some of the listers have the MP version (Evil) while some of us have the RS version (Good)? I know we've discussed this song before and came to the same happy conclusion that it is GREAT. :-) But on to less happy matters... I'm glad you mentioned the concern below, because it's something I've always felt while listening to the song, but never really stopped to articulate to myself. The road is, indeed, dark and cold. And the world is a scary place. And the narrator knows that. And he knows that Mary Ann is alone, and young, and vulnerable, and probably will be grateful for the least bit of help, because you do have to wonder how she ended up on that road at night with her bags. And he knows that what she needs right now is a friend, possibly someone older who can help her pull herself together and get her on her feet again, and offer a bit of advice. He knows all of that, and instead of trying to help her, he does violence towards her. He sees someone vulnerable, and instead of seeing that as an opportunity to help, he sees an opportunity to live out his own twisted fantasies, and to deny Mary Ann her personhood, seeing her just as a potential victim to inflict his sickness upon, rather than a human being whom he can help. You know, at first, I was just disturbed by this song. Now, the more I think about it, the angrier I get--because there are real people really doing things even worse than this every day. And real people that things even worse than this are happening to. - --V Elwestrand wrote: > Our discussion of this made me wonder something new about this > song. What is up with Mary Ann?
