I've not noticed any dates on the website...I gotta see him live. I've not been to a decent folk concert in a while. I wish I lived on the East coast. I think I like the music over there better (although I do love the blues, Chicago)... WRONG WRONG WRONG. Incorrect. Missing the whole danged point. A whole forest/trees thing." Everytime this topic comes up I think about posting to the list, but never have. Well, here goes. I always "interpreted" this song as a man driving along, seeing a young person he knows, and giving her a lift. Even after I "discovered" on the list that it was supposed to be an evil song, I still have a hard time hearing it that way. So I'm in Laura's camp on this one, even if Richard wouldn't agree! :) Sue K Sorry Gene, not 25 words or less! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 14:39:16 -0400 From: "Gene Frey" Subject: [RS] SOTW Hey you guys, Laura pondered: >>P.S. What does SOTW stand for, now that I am completely debased and have >>nothing left to lose? (what freedom!) << SOTW means Songs Other Than the Weather, or, the entire catalog of songs that Richard might actually sing in live performance. No, not really. It means Song of The Week, a device used to organize discussion around a specific song (as topic), or, on occasion, to stimulate conversation during lulls on the list. Not needed since Laura joined, however. Anne plays piano (usually with Frank Marotta Jr., her accompanist, on guitar) and is a wonderful, engaging performer. She's a little more ethereal and quirky than your usual singer/songwriter type, and is a delight to see. She's also finishing up a new album which, based on what I've heard of her new material, should be just absolutely wonderful. Anne's site is http://www.anneheaton.com The music clips seem a little wonky so I'd say you should also go to http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/heaton to hear some snippets. Definitely check out "Megan and Kevin", from the Live CD - it's a song she wrote for her friend's wedding and the damn thing makes me cry every time... As time goes on the music becomes less "folky". My favorite Al album is Year of the Cat. Like Sparrow's Point there is simply not a wasted note, moment or lyric. In my opinion it is perfect and my favorite album of all time hands down. It is not however really a folk album. Al considers himself a folkie even now, but his music often strays into rock, flamenco and he even did a swing album. The lyrics, however, are always of the folk sort. As Lisa mentioned Al's most amazing historical song, The Roads to Moscow, is on Past, Present and Future. While I love that song and Nostradamus (another epic on the album), I am not enamored of the album in general. Another amazing album of his is Life Between the Wars set entirely between WWI and WW2, this is the aforementioned swing album which features the guitar work of Lawrence Juber. As a guitar player it is a stunner. Even more amazing for the guitar work is Rhymes in Rooms his duet live accoustic performance with Peter White. This album is a veritable explosion of guitar playing. Stunning and high energy. Unfortunately, its out of print. But I would be happy to tape it for anyone genuinely interested in Al. So what would I recommend to Norman? 1981's Live at the Roxy. You get many of the great songs in a solid live performance. And perhaps you even get to hear me chearing in the background. Now for Ms. Davis's opinion........ E Who's very first concert was the Year of the Cat tour. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number Voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #360 ***********************************
