I'd check back again; sometimes volunteer-staffed things take some prodding when things start backing up. Squeaky wheels and all that... it's a wonderful listening room and hopefully the show will be worth the effort. Now, the Turning Point, those guys I was sadly dissappointed in. It took me a month and a half and several long distance phone calls (in addition to a few e-mails) to get my refund from the August concert we had to cancel when Cynthia's mom passed away. Regardless of how great a room it might be, that left a fairly bad taste in my mouth, especially since I was counting on THAT money to pay for our Cabin Concert coming up. jpc sc pa ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2001 08:36:52 -0400 From: Roxylee Subject: [RS] Re: Garnet Paul, I'd start with _Speaking Softly in the Dark,_ and after that, the self titled _Garnet Rogers._ Admittedly, I don't have all his albums, but I do have 4 and these two would be the best intros, in my opinion. Since we do, from time to time, recommend to fellow Shindell Listers, new songwriters we've heard and feel RS fans would like as well, let me just sing the praises for one Deb Talan. I believe she hails from the Cambridge area (who doesn't these days?) and is beginning to garner a bit of a following throughout New England. This woman is amazing...her latest CD (there are only two, the first being a live 10-song debut) is called "Somthing Burning" and showcases a truly orginal talent--she reminds me of a female Adam Durwitz of Counting Crows, though her voice is not nearly as raw. She is head and shoulders above most of the girls-with-a-guitar horde that's out there. I recommend going to her site, www.debtalan.com and listening to "Darkest Season" and "Forgiven." You'll be hooked, I'm convinced. But the thing is, the ENTIRE record is as impossibly good as these two songs. My daughter and I haven't taken the CD out of the car stereo in the last five days. Takes a bit of listening to pick up on her groove, but once you do, she sucks you in, much like Dar did in the old days. Highly Recommended. I think Richard would like her too. John Gorka (my first time seeing him in a non-festival setting) knocked my socks off and I managed to have a couple of cute conversations with him...one that he started about html while he was being called up on stage (here is John Gorka...John?? JOhn!!!)..hehehe. But the point of this email is... woman named Sam Shaber opened for him.....oh my god....i haven't been blown away like that since I hear Lucy for the first time a few years back and ummm...check up at the email address to see how I fell about her!! Sam was absolutely amazing!!!!!!! Some songs are very user friendly, while others you need to warm up to but isn't that how it is with most singers. She has 2 1/2 cds--she said her old one wasn't very good so i didnt get it but Perfect is awesome and then she has a Sam*pler cd (yes that is how she spelled it) that is a preview of her new album out next year.....wow ....wow....wow....this girl is going to go far! Her website with song samples is www.samshaber.com ....she's a folk singer from New York that reminds me of a cross of Ani, Lucy, and Katrina Nields with Dar's in between song banter :) Her cd hasn't left my stereo since I got it Sat night....go check her out!! I have to agree with that. It's a completely different song when Richard sings it, and I like his version much better than Dar's. which is not to say that I don't like Dar of course. with a voice as amazing as Richards, I'm afraid there won't be many covers where I'd prefer the original to Richard's version. Well, maybe if he covered Prince's Sign o' the times or something similar (of which, btw, Peter Mulvey does a stellar cover!). Oddly enough, post-September 11th I've felt more > inclined to listen to Al than Richard, which is out of step with the > last9years! > > lisa > Well I have learned one thing on this list. Whatever you do, don't spend to much time praising another male singer. Al and Richard can't really be compared since Al has 30+years under his belt and what, 15 or so recordings (not including all the live ones)? There are a few obvious things one can say about the two of them. They both write songs about things no one else would consider and they don't much care if we are interested in the subject or not. They follow their respective muses. They both hire the best people to work with them. Al and Richard are both great players in their own rights, but both are not afraid to play with heavy hitters. When it comes to voices, well I have to admit that Richard is nearly unparalled. Al doesn't come close. But that has never bothered me. Back to Lisa's question about how they interpret history I can only say this, "no matter how much you think Richard loves history, Al loves it more." And not just recent history, all of it. If Al could go back in time there is no question that he would. Without a backward glance. Al once bought breakfast for a friend of mine and his band. It was at the height of his fame and my friend was in a punk/nu-wave band and the breakfast followed a night of partying with lots of slackers. My friend Patrick said it was comical. Poor Al was desperately trying to have an intelligent conversation with these people about World War II. I once asked Richard if he thought he was a warrior of some kind in a past life. He said no. I asked why he chose to write about the topic. He said something to the effect of: its an interesting place to find material. Al could never look at history dispassionately. Which is not to say I don't think Richard has any passion. But when it comes to history Al is obsessed. The other difference is that Al is English. That can't be overlooked. His awareness of continental history is likely part of his upbringing. On the other hand, Al tends to right from an omniscient voice, often in the past tense, as opposed to Richard's more intimate first person present. Richard makes things very personal. Perhaps this is why a distraught Lisa has retreated to Al? Its a little less traumatic for the most part. Also thinking about it, Richard tends to use the writers trick of throwing in minor details to build intimacy. Al runs toward the "big" picture. Of course these are not hard and fast truths, but general trends. But they are both great. And hopefully Richard will produce as many songs as Al and we will get to go see Richard in 2025. I think Al will be a bit long in tooth by then! But I do see Richard as (at least for me) Al's heir apparent. I hope I am right about that as far as Richard's longevity goes. Wow, maximum verbosity! E P.S. - I have never been on the Al List. Never heard good things about it. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number Voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #357 ***********************************
