Anybody ever hear Christine Collister (Gregson/colllister; Richard Thompson Band) sing For a Dancer? I'd love to hear her sing harmony with richard some time. Not sure on what song though....sure wouldn't be Kenworth, that needs those high crystal sounds of lucy. I'm not always fond of the arrangements she has, though. My favorite works would still be the early tape she and clive had, and her live disc from '94...both of which are much simpler in accompaniment. A few other peolple I'd like to hear sing harmony with richard: emmylou tish hinojosa alison kraus kelly countermine, who is a local around here my girlfriend alice peacock heck, and roxy. jpc in a chilly state college pa ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2001 09:44:33 EDT From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: sparrows point etc. Ron, Mr. Sergeant-at-arms that is, Will buying Sparrows Point and memorizing all the words (ideally sung off key very loudly while driving a large vehicle down the highway) make me one of you VSF's? Because tho I hate to admit it, I've only seen RS 4x in my life, I know some of the words to some of the songs, and I don't know who 50% of the artists you mention here are. I'm afraid I am a mere novitiate. Is that a word? Well, a new-to-Shindell person who gazes oh-so-respectfully at those like you who shout out obscure song titles at the concerts. I can only dream... And yes, I do remember that lullaby from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang--it's lovely and yes, Richard would do it justice. If we all compared ourselves to RonG, whom I reckon has seen Richard play nigh on forty times, we would deem ourselves very inferior Shindell-ites, indeed. I'm just glad you're with us! :-) Don't worry--you'll buy Sparrows Point and be requesting "By Now" in no time! On second thought... Peace, Vanessa:-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2001 10:01:03 EDT From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: lullabies I am going to buy Sparrows Point, with or without an apostrophe, today...even though it is the Holiest of Holy Days for Jews and I have a feeling I'm not supposed to be handling currency, let alone listening to music and memorizing lyrics so I can be a Cool Very Serious Fan. But I am fasting, and so much of RS' music is very religious and reverent, so...here I go!Onward towards the light. And thanks Mark for the lullaby suggestions...it never occured to me (yet) that I could let someone with really nice pitch and talent sing (like Lucy, Dar, Richard, Jackson Browne, Aretha Franklin, Martin Sexton, to name a few)a keep hitting that "repeat" button with my bedroom slipper. Don't you think that your kids think you sing beautifully, though? Mine do...my biggest fans. Thanks, and happy new year to all. RonG doesn't even count as a Shindell-ite. I too was late to the party for Sparrows Point, but now I consider it the essential Shindell disc. You should know, however, that this is not background music. Courier, Castaway, Sparrows Point, Fleur-de-Lis, Nora, and the every cheerful By Now are best when you can really listen, and appreciate the nuance and depth of character in these rich, wonderful, and powerful songs. The title track alone is worth the price of the disc, containing what I think are the best lines Richard has ever written: When my father died from money My mother lived in spite We laughed when nothing was funny But how we wept when nothing was left You can almost taste the desperation. By the way, nonbelievers, you can follow this link for pictures of Mandy Patinkin with a beard, further proving my unassailable point that He and Richard are long lost total strangers, or something. Inconceivable? I think not! http://www.mandypatinkin.net/RAGTIME/ragphotos.html Gene F. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2001 12:46:17 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Sparrows Point/Sparrows Counterpoint >> The title track alone is worth the price of the disc, containing what I think are the best lines Richard has ever written << I agree it's an amazing song, albeit one that time to grow on me, since I was originally suckered in to Richard with "AYHN" and "Kenworth." Ron G's dilemma) are up on Musi-Cal. The tour, as has been announced previously, starts in February 2002. They list a CSI Center for the Arts in New York, NY. The address is 2800 Victory Blvd. That sounds like Staten Island, but I've never heard of the place, and the map link shows 'unknown.' Anybody have a clue? In any case, they're in NYC at Town Hall in March, so they'll be local at least once.
