It did make me LOL--thanks, I needed that. But really, after hearing Richard "cover" Bruce Springsteen's Sandy (2x now), I keep thinking of all of the great songs he could cover, regardless of his tribute to 9/11. I like the idea of "Before the Deluge," which I hadn't thought of. And I'm duly impressed that Rockin/ReportinRonD has the influence/chutzpah to suggest "covers" to Richard, bearded or not! Here is my little (ongoing) list of songs I wish Richard would cover, although come to think of it, couldn't he cover "Happy Birthday" and just be awesome? Hymns to the Silence Tupelo Honey She's Got a Way Brothers in Arms Hearts and Bones St. Judy's Comet Close Your Eyes (James Taylor) Tis a Gift to be Simple Power of Two (Indigo Girls) I'm so Lonesome I could Cry Ghost Riders in the Sky Ribbon in the Sky Tell Her This Persuasion Willow Captain Jack Love and Tenderness I'm Goin' Up (gospel; Mary McDonald) Going back to Laurel Danny Boy Going up the Hill (Kate Bush) Precious Lord take my Hand (T. Dorsey) Hush, Hush (Somebody's calling my name) After the Ball is Over So Much Mine (The Story?) Landslide Still my Guitar Gently Weeps Anything by Johnny Cash Anything by Gordon Lightfoot Anything by Bob Dylan Any Irish/Celtic ballad I Want it That Way (Backstreet Boys)* Bring it on! Very nice, indeed) is done, noted: >> Oy...a beard?? What is up with all the men that I think are good looking >>going and getting damn beards. << Aw shucks...I'm blushing... Seriously, I've been growing a beard since Falcon Ridge, and I don't think anyone has refrained fom commenting either positively ("That doesn't look TOO hideous") to negatively ("Grow it real long and comb it up over your face"). I could grow a third nose and less people would comment. Is it just a how-about-this-weather type conversation starter? Is it some sort of hidden ethnic stereotype manifesting itself? Is it the Oreo crumbs? I have no idea. Covers...I'm all for them. We've seen Richard about 20 times so far, and that means 20 renditions of the usual suspects. I appreciate the need to play the favorites, and the desire for new fans to see them if they're there for the first time. The set list I saw looks like a good balance of covers and appropriate originals to me. And, finally, WrongWrongWrong RonD Wreported: >>Sheesh! EVERYONE knows that CBS 60 Minutes anchor Steve Kroft and Richard >>Shindell were separated at birth! << Steve Kroft? He looks more like Lara Croft. Isn't Steve Kroft the HR Pufnstuf guy? I'll give Deb the Al Leiter likeness, but the only true doppelganger is, as I have said before, Mandy (you came and you gave without taking) Patinkin. Gene F. Rich wrote a song, "1000 Candles, 1000 Cranes" that they recorded on their latest CD, "Waltz of the Wallflowers (A Dysfunctional Duet)". I think it tells a touching story that, for some, it would help to hear. Does anyone think it would suit RS? 1000 Candles, 1000 Cranes by Rich Prezioso My grandmother had three sons She dreamed about her children's children Then came 1941 Only one son would see the war end Joseph died marching in Bataan Frank on the sands of Iwo Jima The day the bomb destroyed Japan She Thanked God and Harry Truman She blamed the godless Japanese For having crushed her sweetest dreams One thousand candles for my sons Every day I will remember In Illinois, far from her past Miss Nakamura still remembers She was six when she saw the flash That turned the world to smoke and ashes Mother taught her daughter well Run from the fire to the river There she found a living hell But not a mother or a father Though she survived with just a scrape Her family vanished into space One thousand suns, a thousand cranes Everyday I will remember My grandmother had three sons She never dreamed she'd have a daughter But at the age of eighty-one She met a nurse named Nakamura It was a question only meant To make some talk and pass the hours About a picture by the bed A photograph of two young soldiers Hatred and anger stored for years Slowly melted into tears One thousand candles, a thousand cranes Everyday I will remember I've a picture in my mind Of two women slowly walking August 6th, 1985 Walking to church to light a candle And they once asked me to explain Why grown men play such foolish games One thousand candles, a thousand cranes Everyday I will remember To listen to the song, you can go to this page http://www.folkera.com/windriver/smallpotatoes/ I have no affiliation with them, but I am a fan and I hope you decide to purchase the CD. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 13:16:14 -0700 From: Lee Wessman Subject: [RS] facial hair > Oy...a beard?? What is up with all the men that I think are good looking >going and getting damn beards. For the last two summers I tried to grow a goatee, but both times I quit when my wife suggested that on some subconscious level I was taking a vow of celibacy. Now, I read in Surfer magazine that among the hip-happening kids at the beach, "goatees were the leisure suits of the '90s." So I'm over it. - -lee ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 17:05:19 +0000 From: Charlie Hunter Subject: [RS] Richard Shows - Taping For those wondering if the tape is rolling, yes, the wonderful Keith Richardson is taping a bunch of the shows, but just direct-to-two-track, not multi-track like we did with Ron & Ben for the live album. We'll see what happens. The live album (now called "Courier" - a title we could all live with - believe me, naming albums is a pain) is just back from the mastering plant and sounds WONDERFUL (if I do say so myself). Can't wait till you guys (gender-neutral) hear it! Artwork goes in next week. - - Charlie ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 17:16:55 -0400 From: Elwestrand Subject: [RS] Misc../The Corrs Well I know one guy in NJ who likes the name of that new Richard Live album! Since we already have a live album on the way, shouldn't these shows be video taped? Then we could have a video! Then we could all see his beard. I am definitely split on the whole beard issue. I tend to like it on guys who are sort of rugged or hawkish. On men of gentle face and otherwise soft features, it tends to make me think either hells angel or Santa Clause (agreeing with the whole voluntary celibacy theory). I think it would probably not be an improvement on Richard. This of course is wildly subjective. There is one problem with beards though: broken capillaries. You guys don't realize that being scraped by stubble is bad for our skin! A soft beard is ok, but stubble can hurt! And speaking of beards, I think the Princess bride/Che era Mandy Patinkin was a much hunkier guy than Richard - sorry Vanessa. However, while they both have amazing voices, I cannot listen to Mandy's solo albums for more than about two seconds before madness sets in. They alternate between cloying and annoying (did anyone really need to bring back Al Jolson's style?) so Richard wins in the music category. The song that has been stuck in my head this week is The Nields, In the Hush Before the Heartache. If only we could turn back time to before this all happened and cherish what we had then. This song really reverberates with me. On the surface its a relationship song, but it translates so well to any time when we wish we could hold on to the moment before our lives divurge. Ok, so I blew it and the record club sent me the new Corrs CD. Any thoughts? Is this providence or should I send it back post haste? Your speedy coments on or off list would be greatly appreciated. Take Care, Elwestrand Full of scattered thoughts! ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number Voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 17:44:42 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: Richard Shows - Taping >> The live album (now called "Courier" - a title we could all live with - believe me, naming albums is a pain) << Call me Mr. Happy Guy.
