Davis" Subject: [RS] Vanessa & other 20-somethings I have been thinking about Vanessa's message and responses from NOrman and myself. I know for a lot of people this is a "loss of innocence." I know for myself I am particularly saddened, Vanessa, that your generation, and my children's generation, now have to endure the kind of fear, tension, sorrow, and anger we had to endure. We had hoped it would be better for you. Funny, as much as I tried to "shield" her from the television footage, all news radio, and other exposure, she somehow (through osmosis?) picked up a lot of information (some factual, some fiction) about 9/11...I suppose at school, or just overhearing the grownups talk about it, weep about it. My intuitive gut reaction to all of this has been to reassure her (and myself) that she is safe and not to be afraid... the trick is saying this with a straight face when you don't believe it. Thanks once again to all of you who replied. Of course, like everything posted here, this is up for strenuous objection. I do see the "everyman" RS/KS link, if I think about it. Laura P.S. Did anyone see the excellent (IMHO)"Behind the Terror" special on Discovery last night? It IS good therapy to talk about the events. Critical Incident Stress or "post traumatic stress" are very real, and talking about the "things that we have seen" can help defuse that. Such stress can manifest itself physically, eg. weight loss from not eating, difficulty sleeping. I've been painting our house the past several days and when "Things That I Have Seen" played on the boom box down on the ground, I almost fell off the ladder when I thought about it. I had that one on repeat for awhile. Re: "No More Excuses"-- I think that's proof of the old adage "Don't piss off a folk singer". So when is Lucy going to cover "Positively 4th Street"? For these shows, he is planning a kind of catharsis - he will be foregoing most of his usual self-penned songs, and will, instead, be doing songs everyone knows, songs that people can sing along with, songs that might help us to get through what's been going on lately. He is planning to bring friends along, to play with him, for a few of the shows, and some of the songs he's been working on include Who Knows Where the Time Goes, Hard Times Come Again No More, America (Paul Simon), and others. Hope you can make it to a show... The choir sang a hymn which was clearly the melody SImon used in "American Tune" -- does anyone happen to know which hymn it is?
