I was mulling over other options of possible national anthems this summer. How about this one by Schooner Fare? It was written to be sung at the celebration reopening the Statue of Liberty after her centennial makeover. However, people told the group not to sing it because they felt it was too rebellious. Rather ironic, considering that our nation was conceived in revolution--turning away from the bad..... WE THE PEOPLE Words and Music by Steve Romanoff We the people, hand in hand, We, the people, understand, That there's an answer, there's a way, We, the people, have to say, So, send the orders to prepare, We, the people, do declare, Send the good news, send the word, We, the people, will be heard, We, the people, everywhere. There's a message in the air, And it's a'movin' across the land, If you listen you can hear it well, my friend, we know the time has come To take our heads out of the sand, 'Cause if we don't the chance might never come again, The future is in reason, Not in building ways of war, And the time has come for reason to be heard, The purpose of the people Is what this declaration's for, And it's why our fathers told us word for word... We won't accept excuses, And we won't accept the lies, Of those who'd lead our nations into hell, It's time to call their bluff, To say to them, enough's enough, It's time we all could hear the tolling of the bell, It's time to feed the hungry, And it's time to heal the pain, And it's time to beat our weapons into plows, It's time to hear the voices that have risen once again, It's the wisdom of the people clear and loud, Singing proud... It is titled 'Sing Me Back Home,' and was written by Merle Haggard. I have seen Richard perform this a few times, often as an encore. I enjoy seeing this one live, especially when he has someone (Lucy, in particular) singing harmonies, and is best with the band, for the electric guitar sound. Gene F. We are seeking an end to this madness across the world, and unless we stand up and do something, it will continue on unchecked against smaller, defenseless nations and peoples, all the while knowing that the US could have done something to end it and did not choose to do so. That will come at a cost, to us and to those we go up against. But when did freedom ever come without a cost? Laura Dear everyone: I'm sorry not to be able to reply individually but I'm sure you understand. Since the last update Saturday morning, I went home down to Water Street, and went over to the Seaman's Church Institute one block south, a beautiful building which is usually used to take care of retired sailors, as the name implies. It had been turned into a supply center and canteen for the rescue workers, police, national guard, utilities workers, etc. They have a nice kitchen and outdoor terrace which had been mobilized, with a generator put in for power. I end up staying all day feeding people, organizing the food arrangements and carrying pots of pasta, chicken, salad, more food that you can imagine. Chocolate cakes, brownies, beer, soda, everything. Waves of big husky men kept coming in the door (big husky women too) sitting down and eating - it was very gratifying - the mood is somewhat upbeat and everyone just wants to work and get the job done. Some neighbors have been cooking pasta for days - we do have gas in the area, just no electricity. I thought I would go home and rest and go back, but I couldn't sleep so I just went back to help move things around - around 10:30 last night I went on a commandeered truck belonging to my neighbor to help deliver socks and underwear to the men at Ground Zero - we put on hard hats and masks (which we are wearing a lot of the time anyway, the smoke is still bad if the wind shifts) and went over. It is more horrifying and shocking than you can tell from tv. There is nothing I can say to describe it. I can't even cry about it, it's more than I can take in and absorb. There is no more talk of rescue, just clearing the area with heavy earth movers - gigantic vehicles. At about 2 I just had to go home and sleep, but some people are just staying up, moving around like zombies. Today (another beautiful day) all my neighbors and I sat out on chairs on the street in the sun, chatting and talking to the utilities workers whom we are urging on to connect the electrical power. I had my cat out in the sun, many dogs were out, three frogs, and I had the first laugh for days because the 12 year old across the street has named his new frogs Crash and Burn. You have to laugh at something after all. I just walked up through Chinatown again - t shirts are sprouting saying things like "I survive attack" -someone whose English isn't so great is churning these out. I am spending the night at home again, power or no power. I will be at work tomorrow. The shopkeepers in Soho are getting nasty again so things are getting back to normal. more soon. love from Zette ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V3 #306 ***********************************
