Anyone famililar with the song? He did a studio version as a slow ballad, but I have a live radio broadcast of him from years back with, I think, Nancy Griffith singing harmony (hard to tell cause it's sort of buried in tape hiss.) But it's much more uptempo and rolling. Great tune. I used to listen to have a tape of his vinyl lp years and years back, and it's good to see him getting some attention. The one that has some Iain Matthews involvement on- I can't recall the title- is also a very good disc IMHO. (Hmmm, richard covering the song prison movie... now that might be neat. And it's even in DADGAD, according to Eric. ) I haven't heard scuffletown yet, but here's a web site that included Eric and one of my sometimes favorites (when he's in the softer, folkie mode- I'm not that much of a fan of his more aggressive, bluesy work), David Olney. http://www.multimania.com/songwriters/blueruby.htm jpc somewhere near beaver stadium ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2001 11:07:26 EDT From: LBECKLAW@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: softly and tenderly Patrick, How observant and clever of you to know that this was a hymn! I had no clue. D'ya think it's because I'm Jewish or just not listening? Anyway, I'll check this out--love gospel and spiritual music, especially now. F. Scott Fitzgerald Found comfort somehow in these words yesterday, which was an unforgettably, unspeakably sad day. Daddies (and some mommies) of the preschool/elementary school kids in our community are still unheard from. Toby To all the good people of this list, I just wanted to say that I'm down here in Buenos Aires in a state of profound sadness and frustration. I wish I were back in my beloved New York - if only just to talk to, or weep with, some perfect stranger in the street. Not that that hasn't happened here. Neighbors in our apartment building have been stopping by to tell me how sorry they are, and to ask if I have family & friends who might have been hurt (I do not, thank God). These little acts of kindness have meant a lot to me. I'm writing to all of you for the same reason that these folks have been ringing the doorbell - to reinforce the "chords of human kindness" that have "come undone" so horribly. I think this is something that we all need to do, in whatever ways we can. This list is, above all, a community - one I've been very much aware of and thankful for. I am here, but my heart is there with all of you. I send you my love, and I pray that you and yours are well. It was such a wonderful night that I'd like to have a better record of it. Does anyone have a set list from that show? In the midst of all this craziness, that he thought of us. I am thankful that my family is safe, even my daughter who is in college in Pennsylvania. I can only pray for those who are missing and their families. It does help to talk, even to a stranger on the elevator or in a store. May we find peace soon. Many of us have wanted to donate blood in the aftermath of yesterday's devastation, but either could not get to a blood center, or could not spend the time waiting on line. Our son A.J. is sponsoring a blood drive on Saturday, September 22. It will be at Calhoun High School, in Merrick, Long Island from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM. This was scheduled a couple of weeks ago for his Eagle Scout Project, and has become infinitely more important in the past days. He spoke to his contact at Long Island Blood Services, and she assured him that there will be a need for more blood within weeks, especially after the passionate response that has taken place over the past few days has subsided. Please e-mail me off-list if you are interested. This is the only list to which I am posting this. I would appreciate anyone else spreading this information, along with my e-mail address, to anyone who may be available to donate blood, and to any other lists where you feel it may be appropriate. Thank you. I planted a peace garden, with white mums and my Buddha statue. It's a place where I can reflect on all the tragedy and sadness, but ultimately it will bring life back into my spirit. While out in the yard, I found a praying mantis. I took it in my hands and, together, we, well, you know....
