Since I recently went off on a bit of a tangent myself about Worcestershire sauce(which started somehow with Worcester, Mass, but I don't remember), guess I'm a bit defensive. Plus, someone DID ask about Son Volt. Somehow I think Richard would approve of these quirky little side bars. Just last week I found out about this new (to me) singer Tom Russell and ordered a CD. I'm okay with it if it maintains a moderate level... and we're way under that point in my book. If I want to know every concert listing, I'll go elsewhere, but if someone noticed, say, that Dave and Tracy were playing in State College PA (and they are) and mentioned it here, I'd be truly grateful. There are several people I've learned about through discussions on the list... Lori McKenna comes to mind right off the top of my head...that I might never have heard otherwise. I think it's just a thing to self-police- if it gets too much, then we stop it. jpc, who actually got to listen to cityfolk on FUV in the truck this am for an hour or so driving back to bellefonte ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2001 09:16:48 -0700 From: Lee Wessman Subject: [RS] Re:other artists So, I'm heading to the record store today. And to tell the truth, it's been a long time since I bought a record that really satisfied me from top to bottom, let alone something by an artist I'd never heard of before. Quickly now - without any tour schedules and life histories, so as not to irk Rockin Ron - is there anything you can unequivocally recommend? Free association here -- if it comes immediately to mind it's probably worthwhile. - -lee ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2001 13:10:38 -0400 From: "Gene Frey" Subject: [RS] Unequivoca-Lee Hey you guys, Lee requested: >>I'm heading to the record store today...is there anything you can >>unequivocally recommend? << Well, most of the best discs I have bought this year are probably not available at your local record store. They are, in no particular order: 'Drum Hat Buddha' by, need I say, Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer 'Slightly Haunted' by Lynn Miles 'David Matheson', the solo release by one of the Moxy Fruvous guys 'Kindling' by Beth Amsel (this may or may not actually be released yet. I got mine at Falcon Ridge) If you can wait until September 25, I hear the new Jay Farrar will be in stores..... It's been a little bit delayed, but I've heard it (I could tell you how, but then I'd have to shoot someone) and it's close to "Slightly Haunted" in its wonderfulness. Also, to echo Elwestrand, Kris Delmhorst's new one, "Five Stories," is fantastic. Ron, btw, did "Surrender Dorothy" from the forthcoming LM disc, at his performance Saturday night in beautiful downtown Glen Rock. My sister Fran and I were especially blessed because he had already done said song, then sang it again at the end of his show for some of us who were late arrivals! Unfortunately, we forgot our cigar lighters. Nancy p.s. I should mention that Ron also paid homage to Richard, Dave & Tracey, Cheryl Wheeler, Gram Parsons, and others. Of course, I'm also interested in what the oldtimers think too. Is the INS agent in "Fishing" completely unredeemable? Do you think the potential deportee is trying to convince him to let him go? Who should play the agent in the movie? Dylan McDermott? William H Macy? Gary Condit?? OK--I definitely had a weird experience this morning, and I need help unraveling the mystery. I was in a blue Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer with two friends--we were headed to the DMV near Princeton, NJ. The driver made a wrong turn, and tried to pull into a driveway that was on the other side of the road, so our car was angled perpendicular to oncoming traffic on both sides, and no one would let the driver pull into the driveway and complete the maneuver. Anyways, the point is, someone finally did let her move through. This gentleman was driving a small green car and looked uncannily like--you guessed it--Richard Shindell. He was about three yards away, and he really looked just like Richard, down to his easy and slightly bemused smile. The incident occured near Route 1, at about 9am this (Monday) morning. And no matter how you look at it, it's weird. Either there's some guy out there driving a small green car and looking scarily like Richard, or Richard did just happen to be along that road, or lack of sleep is playing mean, mean tricks on me. So here's where you guys come in. Is he in Argentina right now, or the States? Has he ever been known to drive a green car? Might he have been driving around Jersey early in the morn? This mystery vexes me. I am terribly vexed. I eagerly await your replies.
