The song, officially called "The Lakes of Pontchartrain," is an old traditional tune, which I know has been covered by Irish folksinger >Paul Brady. I have an explanation about some of its various origins on the "Covers & Others" section on my Richard Shindell chords page. I've also heard Bob Dylan perform this song in concert. I am deeply saddened. c) "Without futher ado, Richard Shindell" has been cut - it now starts with a fade-up of applause, Richard says, "thank you" and "The Courier" starts. d) We are at work on the record-release tour. There will be some solo dates prior to the Joan Baez/Richard Shindell/Dave & Tracy tour, then, after it, Richard will hit the rest of the US (have no fear, Western friends). Europe is still one big question mark. Like, oh, Richard and Tom Russell. Or Richard and Lucy. So I take it that the Joan, Dave, Tracy, Richard-combo does not plan a European tour at this point? Oh well. Thank God for the EP. >> Richard has decided he does not like "Hell Bent on Saturday" as a title. I am deeply saddened. << As am I. I think the answer is simple. But then, I only own two of his albums... so I'm not really an expert (somebody asked about it: I do have the new one and I really, really like it. Now I can't do much of a comprehensive comparison to his earlier work, but the new one is great. I wouldn't say it's a concept album per se, but it does deal with the theme of borders, all sorts of them. get it!) His latest, "Endless Sky," is a fabulous CD, all the way through. I also like his earlier work, Step by Step, alot too. Talk about smooth pickers, this guy never wastes a single note--and his tunings are pretty diverse. Don't miss him if you get a chance to see him. Great guy too--he's not called the Zen Cowboy for nothing. Glad to see you're still groovin' on this song Norm. The imagery in the verse you quote is stunning. I really can picture an Eisenhower sky: big and blue above white picket fence America, but with the threat of war raining down from it. And the Kerouac stream just flowing over the land doing its own thing in spite of the alleged threat from above. Then the words of the song go on to show how interconnected, even interdependent, these two seemingly convergent historical figures are. Just like rivers and the sky. peter > This day in 1957 Jack Kerouac's _On the Road_ was published. > > One of the contenders for my favorite song of 2001 is John Gorka's "Oh > Abraham".
